Bruno Richard Hauptmann’s lawyers will file a federal habeas corpus petition to delay his execution. Five attorneys, with two Washington lawyers, discussed the move after several days of work. Harold G. Hoffman returns to Trenton as the 1936 legislature opens, withholding further updates.
Jan 14. Trenton. The Hauptmann case moves toward possible delay of the 8 PM Friday execution as Gov. Hoffman weighs a possible reprieve. Hauptmann again declares innocence while his wife notes no new story, and officials discuss the chance of a Lindbergh baby being found alive.
Congress schedules a busy day with the Agriculture and Forestry committee hearing on AAA replacement, the Munitions committee continuing war loan inquiry, and Finance panel reviewing bonus legislation. House meets at noon to consider independent offices appropriations, while other panels tackle appropriations naval affairs rivers and harbors and public lands. Foreign Affairs continues neutrality study and Ways and Means outlines session program. Judiciary reorganizes and District of Columbia legislation is considered.
Ethiopian officials from Dessye report Italian fliers bombed Lakota on January 10 destroying St Marys Church. Ten congregation members killed or wounded and ten Ethiopians blinded by gas bombs. Five scorched by bombs. Town bombed daily 125 miles northwest of Dessye. An unmarked Italian plane flew over Dessye today without bombing. Prisoners claim Italian troops were ordered to burn churches.
Police identified Gene Belmonti, 30, an ex-convict suspected in illegal alcohol racketeering, as the victim of a gang slaying. He was shot four times and finished with a shotgun, his body found in a car beneath an elevated railway station. Officers say shooters waited for a train rumble to muffle the gunfire.
Dr. William F. Leiser son, chairman of the National Mediation Board, told Antioch College students in Yellow Springs Ohio that the NRA is not dead. He said many people know the NRA was not a failure and that its goals are being pursued and will continue for years, calling the supreme court decision a mere spectacular incident.
Col. F. Marion Walker pleaded not guilty today when arraigned before Justice Arthur Leser on a charge of shooting William K. Davis of Columbus. Davis, a former Logan resident and Hocking Valley railroad engineer, was shot the night of January 4 after a motorist stopped his car over a hogging-the-road accusation. Walker is held in jail in lieu of $5000 bond.
A move on Capitol Hill seeks to empower the treasury to retain or collect the 1.2 billion dollars in taxes on farm product processors, levied under the invalidated AAA. Senator Bankhead proposes retroactive re enactment as a general revenue measure to keep money for farmers and impound funds already collected. The Supreme Court had struck down the AAA program as unconstitutional.
Ohio relief policy faces fresh hurdles as the Cleveland welfare federation questions the 5 percent administrative cost cap in the $10.5 million six month relief bill. Opposition grows with the Boyd Unemployment Insurance Bill awaiting passage despite industry criticism. Gov. Davey aims to cut costs to two percent and Senate leaders dispute relief demand levels from workers.
London reports the International Naval Conference will continue even if Japan does not participate. American and British officials held a lengthy meeting at the foreign office to discuss the issue and its implications.
In Cleveland on January 14 AP report details testimony by John Lavery a former Summit County deputy sheriff about how bootleggers in 1933 34 contributed to a campaign fund. The testimony is part of the case against Ray Potts and 15 others on conspiracy to violate internal revenue laws.
Henry A. Roemer who is also president and chairman of Sharon Steel Hoop Co was elected president of Pittsburgh Steel Co at a special directors meeting in Pittsburgh. Sharon Steel recently acquired a substantial stake in Pittsburgh Steel and a merger of the two firms is anticipated.
Six men pleaded guilty in Gallipolis common pleas court and received sentences from one to 20 years. Among them Richard Sexton, 18, of Portsmouth, was sent to Mansfield reformatory for helping rob two filling stations.
Three accused kidnapers were killed in a running gun battle with Cuban soldiers near Guanajay Cuba. The incident followed the abduction of Paulino Gorostiza 28 son of a wealthy manufacturer who was abandoned by his abductors in the foothills near the village.
Detectives seized five men and two women in Cleveland and Lorain, breaking a gang that had stolen about 25000 dollars. One suspect led a 65 mile per hour chase before crashing. Cash and bank deposits totaling 6460 were found at a hideout amid ties to a prior holdup.
Howard Hughes, the California aviator, set a new transcontinental speed record in a nonstop flight from Burbank to Newark, covering about 2450 miles at an average near 260 mph. He flew at times above 18000 feet, with a peak of 296 mph on a long stretch, using a Wright Cyclone engine delivering 700 horsepower.
Police say Joseph Koran Jr. 17 died from a head wound after a family dispute over a pistol found near the wounded youth. Det Sergt James Hogan reports the father admitted concealing the weapon and claimed the boy may have shot himself after quarrels at school. The father defended his actions saying he tried to cover for him.
The Senate finance committee approved the coalition bonus payment bill 15 to 2, with plans to bring it to a Senate vote Thursday. The measure provides for full payment after June 15 next of bonus certificates in baby bonds redeemable for cash, with an estimated total government cost around 2.49 billion dollars.
A tenement fire on West 44th Street near Times Square killed Ped ro Chabes 33 found on a stairway and Frank Murello 31 in a fourth floor room. The blaze forced 50 tenants to flee, was controlled in 30 minutes after a double alarm, and the building behind the Martin Beck Theatre had been remodeled a year ago.
