City workers and council debated the mayor's veto of a 40 dollar per month wage increase for full time staff. The meeting reviewed a 34 employee petition to override the veto and concerns over a dwindling general fund balance.
Police Chief Roy Kelch says two thirty dollar bonds are missing since November and were reported at last night’s City Council meeting. He notes the department handles about thirty thousand dollars yearly and pledges to replace the shortfall in January.
Annual dinner set for Thursday January 28 at 6 30 p m at the National Guard armory with Hugh DeMoss TV news commentator as guest speaker. Oliver Mills faces a first degree murder trial in Vinton County Common Pleas Court. Seven jurors have been seated with Marguerite Lamb of McArthur as the sole seated member this morning. Others tentatively seated include Crow West Patterson of McArthur, Herwick of Creole, and Eberts Buskirk of Hamden.
Ohio State Rep. George Voinovich plans to introduce a bill in the legislature to permanently ban gas and oil drilling in Lake Erie. The measure would remove the Ohio Department of Natural Resources authority to issue permits. A temporary ban expires in 1972, and Voinovich hopes the move will spur broader state action along the lake.
A federal grand jury indicted Rev. Philip Berrigan and five others for a plan to blow heating ducts in government buildings and seize Kissinger. The scheme, tied to the East Coast Conspiracy to Save Lives, aimed to pressure U.S. policy and secure the release of political prisoners.
Cairo newspaper Al Gomhouria reports Egypt proposes a three point plan calling for a UN led peace keeping force under the UN flag. It urges a Security Council meeting before February 5 to set guidelines based on the November 1967 resolution and demands Israel withdraw and evacuate occupied territory. Verbal notes pass via UN ambassador Mohammed El Zayyat to UN mediator Gunnar V. Jarring.
The New York stock market eased its push toward new recovery peaks on Wednesday while sustaining a broad, slow advance in active trading. At noon the Dow Jones average of 30 industrial stocks rose to 945.50, up 1.31 points.
Arnoldo Aguirre a 15 year old from Lima Peru arrives for a two month stay with the Jack Myers family at 45 North High Columbus. He will attend school with Mike Myers and learn about American life while sharing his culture and language.
Ohio University President Claude Sowle urged Gov. John Gilligan to appoint an arbitrator from a Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service list to avert a potential strike by non academic employees. He linked the dispute to a broader university crisis needing state action. The union, led by Herschel Sigall of Council 21, rejects arbitration but would accept mediation by the governor or attorney general.
The 109th General Assembly adopted rules and assigned committees and planned an afternoon recess to Jan 19. Gov Gilligan’s new Democratic administration will submit proposals as Gray and others push for the skeleton session to assign bills while hearings begin during the break.
The Associated Press reports heavy snow across the Northwest into the Rockies with freezing drizzle glazing highways from Nebraska to Ohio. Central Ohio cities cancel or delay school as ice disrupts traffic. a warming trend is forecast tonight with rain and showers, while a major storm moves toward the Great Lakes.
The Hocking County Community Chest will hold its annual meeting at 7:45 p.m. next Tuesday at the Red Cross office 483 N Walnut St. Officers will be elected for the ensuing year and reports on the 1971 campaign will be reviewed. All Chest contributors are invited.
