A nearly 10 inch snowfall, the largest in years, paralyzed the Hocking Valley as another 3 to 6 inches were forecast. All area schools closed, roads treacherous, and city crews cleared streets and hills all day. Funeral services at Oak Grove Cemetery were aided by plows.
Fidel Castro arrived in Moscow for a surprise visit to meet Premier Khrushchev amid appeals for a larger Soviet aid package for Cuba. The trip follows a Cuban delegation in Moscow seeking increased assistance as U S policy in the region draws sharp criticism.
The Ohio blizzard stranded motorists and shut roads statewide. Nine inches fell in Mansfield and Marietta with eight inches in Akron and Youngstown as winds up to fifty mph drove drifts. Dozens of schools closed and two men died from heart attacks possibly linked to shoveling snow.
Washington C H firm Coffman Stair Co buys the former Sun Glow Furniture Industries plant from Weiman Co of Rockford Illinois. The 91 year old company plans to consolidate operations in Logan with about 200 workers affected by the fire that destroyed their Washington C H main plant December 29.
Los Angeles AP report: California Democratic Chairman Eugene Wyman says U.S. Senator Clair Engle is not in condition to campaign. Engle, who had brain surgery in August, looked good but spoke hesitantly. Engle recently announced plans to seek re election in November.
The Weather Bureau called the winter’s worst storm as gale winds and heavy snow disrupted travel across the eastern United States. New York saw 2 to 5 inches with up to 6 inches forecast. Western Pennsylvania reported 5 to 10 inches since Sunday afternoon.
United States and Panama agreed to form a joint peace authority with the OAS to stabilize the Canal Zone border amid renewed violence in Colon. A five member delegation will finalize details for a peace force with US and Panamanian military and civilian members and a neutral OAS chairman.
Danny Leasure, 15, confessed to shooting his parents Herman and Jean Leasure on a Granville area farm last Thursday. He planned the act after a family dispute over his 17 year old girlfriend and was to be taken to a juvenile diagnostic center.
Paul Amos Sandblom, 39, a bankrupt financier, was remanded to the county jail on $25,000 bond after arraignment on a Securities and Exchange Act violation. He surrendered with lawyers Luther Jones and Oscar Spitz at a shopping center. A receiver said $27 million was allegedly owed and only about $27,000 in assets found.
Opal Iles of 480 East Front Street died at 8 30 p m Sunday after years of declining health She was wife of Jasper Iles and mother of Floyd Iles She lived in Logan over 50 years and belonged to Logan Methodist Church Queen Vashti Rebekah Lodge Pythian Sisters and Pocahontas Lodge She is survived by her husband two sisters Ada Bethard Mabel Warner and Jerry Kohl The funeral is scheduled for 2 p m Wednesday at Heinlein Funeral Home with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery Friends may call after 7 p m today
Paul Hartman announced today his bid for a second term as Hocking County sheriff in the 1964 election. A Hocking County native and Logan High School graduate, he ran Paul Fox's Meat Market for 25 years and has held posts with the Chieftain Boosters. He is a World War II veteran, life member of the DAV, and active in the Izaak Walton League Farm Bureau American Legion Murray City St Matthew Lutheran Church and is married to Mildred Columber with four children.
