Logan mayor pushes 2-mill levy for cemetery and fire dept

Mayor Merril Haney urged Logan City Council to place a ten year 2-mill tax levy on the May ballot with half a mill to Oak Grove Cemetery and 1% mills to the fire department. Revenue funds cemetery land, walls, roads, and equipment and a new fire station with gear. He urged careful spending and changes to tax splits to boost capital improvements.

Raging Wind and Snow Hit Great Plains and Midwest

A storm of hurricane force winds and heavy snow lashed the western mountains and northern Great Plains with travel warnings posted from Washington to Nebraska. Clouds and cooler air were forecast for the Hocking Valley with morning showers turning to snow flurries, as 11 am temperatures reached 41 degrees and overnight fell to 22.

Arctic storm strands residents as heavy snows hit Montana region

Blizzard warnings covered Montana while heavy snow warnings extended into Minnesota and Wisconsin. Seven Idaho counties closed schools as roadways froze. In Swan Valley, over 100 people near the Wyoming border were cut off by drifts. An arctic air mass followed, bringing bitter cold into the upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes region.

Slain Woman Found in Home Freezer in Toronto

Toronto police say Grace Evelyn Todd was shot in the head on August 4. Her husband David Wilfred Todd, 38, is held without bail on noncapital murder charges. The body was found by youths under frozen food trays after neighbors observed the freezer being moved into the Cassidy home. Georges Cassidy's group learned of the case after a TV program about a body in a trunk.

Safer cigarette possible says NIH researcher

Washington AP reports Dr Gio Gori of the National Institute of Health National Tobacco Working Group says a 100 percent filter could remove all smoke from tobacco but would be hot air. He notes safer cigarettes require less nicotine and may not satisfy smokers, with trials expected in two to three years to yield low or zero nicotine strains for commercial use.
