Ohio Senate Debates City Income Tax Increase on First Day

On opening day in Columbus the Ohio Senate introduced a bill to raise city income taxes from 1 to 2 percent with a majority vote approval for higher tiers and a 55 percent margin to expand beyond 1 percent. Other measures include TB testing for school staff, protections against unsolicited merchandise, and limits on train crossing delays.

Bills Would Reform Ohio Election Laws

Nine reform bills heading to the Ohio House seek broader voter eligibility by easing registration rules for students and movers. New Prosecutor Chooses Logan Federal Office

R Ned Cochran the newly elected Hocking County prosecutor will keep his office in the Logan Federal building and run a private practice with Don Patterson. Mrs Cochran will serve as clerk and secretary. The court set 6800 dollars as the 1969 budget for assistants clerks and stenographers in his office.

A two year Air Force funded study led by Dr. Edward Condon reports no scientific proof that flying saucers are visitors from another world though it does not deny life beyond Earth. U S Troops Narrow Red Force in Mekong Delta Clash

In the Mekong Delta a 600 strong U S task force attacked a Viet Cong company of about 100 to 130 men, claiming 48 enemy killed while eight Americans died and 11 were wounded. Helicopters and flares aided the operation as the Viet Cong slipped away before dawn. In Saigon a suspect was arrested in Education Minister Le Minh Tri’s assassination, with police guarding cabinet ministers thereafter.

Premier Yafi of Lebanon to quit post

Premier Abdullah Yafi submitted his resignation amid criticism over the Bei rut international airport raid. A government spokesman said President Helou had not yet accepted it, while Beirut papers floated a national coalition and a possible successor Rashid Karami with a tougher stance toward Israel.

Saigon denies Ky authored a three part peace plan for Vietnam though he says the idea is under study by the Thieu government. Paris talks would involve US South Vietnam and North Vietnam in military questions while Saigon and Hanoi meet perhaps on a neutral ship. NLF would meet in South Vietnam to discuss political and security issues, a move Hanoi and the NLF would oppose.

House Votes To Double Nixon Salary

The House approved doubling Nixon's presidential pay to 200000 a year plus a 50000 expense allowance and a 40000 travel allotment. The measure, passing by voice vote with one dissent, must clear the Senate and be signed before Nixon is sworn in.
