Ohio's 173 member General Assembly opens its 1957 session amid money concerns. A cabinet pay hike for Gov elect ONeill's team is eyed, plus a $125 million school subsidy rise to reach nearly $400 million, with debates over taxes and funding for state projects and local governments.
Congressman Thomas A. Jenkins of Ironton has been reelected chair of the Ohio Republican delegation in Congress. The Ohio group holds 17 of 23 House seats, second largest bloc behind New York. Jenkins serves on the Ways and Means Committee and notes talks of cutting taxes, including excise taxes, with a subcommittee report ready for full committee.
The transport Haan docked in New York with 1,716 Hungarian refugees. The group includes 279 women and children and 29 infants under one year old.
A shipload of 957 Jewish men women and children arrived in Naples from Alexandria touting terror imprisonment and forced exile from Egypt. An Egyptian officer denied the account saying arrivals were treated well and left by choice. Intruders burglarizing Pat Largent's grocery on Rt. 56 east edge of Coonville took the cash register. Sheriff Waldron and Deputy Rheinscheid report entry by breaking front door glass and unlocking the door. The theft occurred Saturday night between 5 20 p.m. and Sunday 8 30 a.m. Missing items include $20 in cash $20 worth of cold meats 10 boxes of rifle shells and five cartons of cigarets.
SAYERSVILLE Ky The search for three Ironton jail escapees intensified after one of the quartet was arrested. He said the remaining three were likely in the vicinity and warned authorities they could be at large in the area.
Washington lawmakers plan hearings on a new GI Bill of Rights for veterans who did not serve during Korea. Chairman Teague and Rep. Ayres indicated support for peacetime veterans in the 85th Congress to extend benefits.
