The National Cancer Institute finds cancer death rates vary by location and race, with blacks comprising 92 percent of the nonwhite group in a study of 35 cancers from 1950 to 1969. Overall nonwhite rates slightly exceed white rates, and regional patterns show higher breast colon esophagus ovary and bladder cancers in the North.
Gov. James A. Rhodes and Senate Majority Leader Oliver Ocasek clash over funding. Rhodes opposes the equal yield subsidy as a tax based reward system and backs a possible state guarantee for basic education. Ocasek defends current equal yield and cites a $500 million two-year increase, with aims to raise state share to about 50 percent by 1978-79.
President Ford hosted a candlelit dinner for his Cabinet and received a coffee table sized copy of the White House Cabinet room table. Each cabinet member’s signature is engraved at their seating spot as a keepsake. Secretary Kissinger presented the gift at the snowy Washington affair.
Clarence Collins of the U S Department of Labor spoke to Hocking County commissioners about the Tri County CAA complaint over Title I employment program management. Commissioners Shaw and McLain said CAA had ample chance to present views and that county officials could better utilize funds locally. Collins will file a Chicago report and hopes a full investigation won’t be needed.
Laredo Texas police ordered to shoot to kill suspicious dogs amid a feared rabies outbreak that has killed at least 20 dogs. Seven people including two children have been bitten and 14 others exposed. antirabies shots begun, no infections reported yet.
President elect Carter urged the Democratic National Committee to elect former Maine Governor Kenneth M. Curtis as party chairman. He also named Sidney Harman as undersecretary of commerce. Curtis would succeed Robert Strauss, who plans to return to his law practice in Dallas.
Ford backs James A. Baker III for Republican chair as Reagan allies push for Richard Richards. Rockefeller supports the president’s choice while Carter backs Kenneth M. Curtis for Democratic chair as Strauss departs. The Jan. 14 or 15 vote looms amid intra party tensions.
Ohio school officials seek ways to save gas while avoiding activity cuts as Columbia Gas of Ohio trims allocations. In northwest districts seven of seventeen fear winter continuation, considering earlier spring vacation, lower heat, split sessions, and shutting high use buildings.
Two weather systems squeeze the state bringing cloudy skies and an 80 percent chance of snow with overnight lows near 20. Friday should see partly cloudy conditions with highs around 30 and a 20 percent snow chance. Morning temp was 28 under overcast, after Wednesday's 36 high and an overnight low of eight.
