Ship Rams Tasman Bridge Killing At Least 10 In Hobart
A British ore freighter the Lake Illawarra struck the Tasman Bridge in Hobart Tasmania injuring and killing at least ten people. The ship sank the bridge segment and four lane roadway into the Derwent River while the crew of 42 mostly survived. Local witnesses described the collapse and vehicles plunging from the bridge. The incident marked Australia’s second worst bridge disaster after Melbourne’s Westgate collapse in 1970.
