The Associated Press reports floods worsened by arctic cold, hitting Mississippi Alabama Tennessee and Georgia. Rivers overflowed isolating towns while California Arizona citrus belt foresees further losses. Industry impact pegged at about 20 million with threats of new floods in the northeast.
The Hocking River and tributaries subsided as colder air reduced flood risk after heavy rains Tuesday and Wednesday. Noon temperature reached 34 degrees with a chilling wind and scattered snow.
The blizzard moved out of the Dakotas and Nebraska while Utah and Nevada recorded subzero readings. Cold air reached Arizona and California with freezing temperatures in Phoenix Fresno and Los Angeles. More than 2,200 people fled floodwaters around Columbus Mississippi and thousands more in Alabama and Tennessee. Rescue crews and air drops aided strained communities as the death toll stood at five with danger of rising after drifts are cleared.
Firemen were sent to Weis Grocery at 363 Gallagher Avenue last night for smoke in the store. No flames or damage were found. A smouldering cotton glove in a coal bucket caused the smoke. alarm rang at 11:30 P.M.
Two former Swift & Co. Columbus plant employees, Paul Thacker and Theodore Cooper, were placed on six months probation after pleading guilty to theft of meat. Cooper must reimburse $125 and Thacker pays for two hams. Six defendants pleaded guilty. four more face sentencing later as part of a wider Fairfield County grand jury investigation into meat thefts and stolen property.

The Lake Carriers Association announced that iron ore coal limestone and grain movement on the Great Lakes last year totaled 185 359 835 tons. The figure exceeded the 1942 war year peak by about 1 200 000 tons.
Senate backers move to repeal Taft Hartley and restore Wagner act as they push Truman tax welfare and labor program. Leaders vow swift action within 10 days, aiming final form before Truman oath January 20. Republicans warn of bankruptcy while supporting some measures.

Governor elect Frank J. Lausche says he will keep Herbert D. Defenbacher, a Republican, as finance director when he takes office January 10. Defenbacher served under Bricker and continued through Lausche’s 1945-46 term and Herbert’s administration.
John A. Hoover, Seneca County sealer of weights and measures, said bear tracks were found at nearby Old Fort. The discovery marks the first bear sighting in several years in the area.

The Red Cross bloodmobile, operating from the Columbus regional blood center, will visit cities within 70 miles of Columbus in January and February. Vernon, Delaware, Mansfield, Lancaster, Marion, and more.
In Youngstown Ohio autopsies reveal lungs dark coal black instead of pink or gray. Dr A E Rappoport of the city hospital laboratories warns coal dust and solvents from flues can cause lung cancer and urges smoke abatement as part of a public health campaign.
Dr. Hugh H. Bennett declares northwestern Ohio farm soils from the old lake bed are dense and compact, hindering water absorption. He notes the weight difference between cropped soil and virgin soil and urges rapid expansion of soil conservation districts across Ohio to combat widespread erosion affecting twelve million acres and five sixths of the state used for farming.
Philadelphia report says Dorothy Elizabeth Reeves was found not guilty by a 12-person jury after a little over an hour of deliberation in the case of Leslie Reeves shot September 5. The prosecution sought conviction on an honor slaying charge alleging the husband had dishonored the defendant’s sister Peggy Miles. Reeves sobbed and was supported by court attendants upon verdict.
