Winter weather grips Logan and Hocking counties with 36 hours of rain followed by a cold snap and light snow. Hocking River swelled, highways slick, crews spread ashes and calcium to curb danger. One accident reported in the county, none in the city as temperatures rose from 29 to 22 by noon.
Alexander W. Weddell former ambassador to Spain and Argentina and 13 holiday travelers died in a New Year’s Day collision of two Missouri Pacific trains near Otterville Missouri. About 12 were injured five hospitalized. Weddell and his wife were among the dead. The crash halted traffic as crews worked in freezing weather with assertions of negligence and blocked signals amid holiday travel.
Ironton Ohio January 2 three city leaders were replaced after a council reorganization following elections. City manager since 1941 Ralphi Mittendorf was succeeded by Henry M Stanley at 5180 yearly. City solicitor since 1930 F A Ross was replaced by H A McCown. City treasurer since 1941 Arthur Turnbull was succeeded by V C Stuntebeck.
Police were called to the 600 block of Church Street to quell a resident protest over a stray cat’s loud night song. Officers searched for the cat but could not locate the offender.
The comptroller of the currency issued a call for a statement of the condition of all national banks as of December 31, 1947, in Washington.
New York January 2 unions overseas communication workers walked out at four cable firms tying up about two thirds of transoceanic transmissions. About 3500 employees joined in at midnight as talks with Western Union MacKay Radio Commercial Cable and All-America cables broke down. ACA president Joseph P Selly declared the strike after four hours of picket lines and scattered offices in San Francisco and Washington.
J. Q. Williams, owner of a local dry cleaning shop, reported to police that he was held up by an armed man and robbed of roughly $1,200 at his store shortly after 10 A M. today.
Joseph Swackhammer 68, a lifelong Blue Creek resident and unmarried Hocking County farmer, died at 2 10 P M in Hocking Valley Hospital after five days as a patient. Funeral services set for 2 30 P M Sunday at Mt Carmel Church with Rev. Elsen. burial in the adjoining cemetery by Defenbaugh Funeral Service Circleville. Surviving brothers are Calvin of Laurelville and Grant of Lancaster.
Fire origin traced to an overheated brake on a car operated by Ray Redick of Logan. Flames started on West Hunter Street but caused no damage. Vehicle owned by Woodrow Nutter of Logan. Fire Chief Roy Stallsmith reported no injuries.
Xenia Ohio postmaster Harry A Higgins resigns after nearly 14 years of service with retirement set for January 31. He announced the decision yesterday and will conclude duties at month end.
Governor Thomas J. Herbert and Miss Mildred Stevenson plan a small private wedding in Indianapolis with family and close friends attending. After a brief honeymoon through the southern states the couple will return to Columbus around January 20. Attending are two sons Daniel and John David, Miss Bertha Keubler, Dr and Mrs C L Stevers, and other relatives from Cleveland and Columbus.
Roy Ewing Vale reports indicate a marriage ceremony planned tomorrow in Indianapolis uniting Governor Herbert and Miss Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. The governor and family were to depart Columbus by plane at noon amid uncertain weather.
The eight year old Shelia Ann Tuley was found slain on a neighbor’s porch near her east side Cleveland home. Coroner Gerber ruled homicide after seven stab wounds. police have no suspects. Edward Tuley searched the area after Shelia failed to return from a cigarette errand.
Willard E. Mason promoted from assistant train master at Logan to supervisor of terminals for the C and O Railroad in Columbus. He succeeds his father Ralph A. Mason, retiring after 50 years with Hocking Valley and C and O. No Logan replacement announced. Mason will move to Columbus when housing found.
Carl R. Perry 38 of Sunbury husband of Barbara Till of Logan died 12:15 A M New Year’s Day at Doctors Hospital Columbus from cerebral hemorrhage. He managed a Kroger store in Sunbury and was past president of the Lions Club there. Survived by wife mother five sisters four brothers. Services Sunday 2 P M at Wilson funeral home Sunbury. burial in Sunbury cemetery.
Coast guardsmen battled heavy seas to rescue 21 men from the fishing steamer Charlie Mason driven aground near Ocracoke Island North Carolina just before midnight. One crew member died from a heart attack after leaping into the water, as chief boatswain's mate J L Gaskill and the station crew joined the effort.
A massive five alarm blaze swept an office building and two converted apartment houses on Manhattan's west side near Columbus Circle. Dense smoke forced evacuations as residents, many in nightclothes, were led down ladders and an 80 year old woman jumped to a safety net. Eight firefighters were overcome by smoke during the morning operation.
Ohio starts 1948 with a mixed weather day as rain sleet ice and thunder hit the state. Temperatures vary from 60 in Cincinnati to near freezing in northwest towns and 64 in Chesapeake as high winds unroofed homes and toppled barns.

Walter Eugene Harper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Forest Wesley Harper of Big Pine near Laurelville, was the first baby born in Hocking County in 1948. He arrived at 5 15 A M New Year’s Day at the Harper home with Dr. C F Grattidge of Laurelville attending.
In Oakland a private first class traveling from overseas paid $150 after a 30 hour 40 minute sightseeing cab ride. The man rode from 2:20 A M Tuesday to 9 A M Wednesday across the Bay Bridge Sausalito Vallejo Carquinez and Berkeley Hills to view sunrise before heading to Camp Stoneman en route to Lorain Ohio. The cab driver recalls only the man’s first name Johnny and a thick roll of bills.
The winter storm from the Oklahoma Texas border to New England caused power and phone outages across hundreds of communities. Ice and snow delayed trains and flights, with millions in damages projected. New York City faced downed lines and outages after a heavy prior snowfall. The Dixie tornadoes killed 21, adding to holiday traffic deaths over the period.
A three year old Shawnee boy, Robert William Brunton, was struck by a car on Route 75 near Shawnee New Year’s afternoon and taken to Hoecking Valley Hospital for injuries. The driver was Albert Groff of New. The boy was brought to the hospital by Thomas Charles of Shawnee.
France signed a treaty with the United States accepting conditions set by Congress to grant 522 million dollars in winter aid to France, Italy and Austria.
