Nicholas Dozenberg, described as the No 2 Communist in the U S, was arrested in Bend Oregon and brought to New York where federal officers held him on a 35000 bail. The fragmented clipping also mentions a Nazi liner scuttled off Virginia coast and a county agricultural society being formed.
Daniel M vis of Logan Route 3 becomes the first in Hocking County to secure a 1940 hunting license as tags went on sale Tuesday and dog licenses Wednesday. James R Smoot notes the county livestock directory for Hocking Athens Noble and Ashington counties is now available at the extension office.
After a spell of warmth a west wind and light flurries reinvigorate forecasts for a potential White Christmas. The Hocking County area anticipates cooler temperatures with a low in the thirties and Wednesday night turning windy.
Clerk of Courts Don Feather announced Tuesday that 940 hunting licenses are available at his office with badges on sale. The new licenses replace last year's tags and are made of waterproofed linen versus metal. Licenses must be displayed on the back of every hunter in the id. The event will be announced with a whistle blast at the city waterworks as Santa makes his rounds.

The Citizens Savings and Loan Co liquidators began a nine percent dividend at the local office Wednesday, marking the fourth payout and bringing total to 69 percent of the original amount. Depositors must bring certificates of claim. another dividend up to one percent may follow before final liquidation. Judge Phil A. Henderson approved the payout.
WPA officials in Hocking County announced that over 50 workmen will be discharged from city project rolls. The order from the Zanesville district office affects the Spring Street relaying crew from Hunter to Second Streets. City officials had sought release for the project but were refused. an inspector urged immediate release after a survey to get work moving.

Columbus driver C. E. Walters pleaded guilty to assault and battery against Harry Shaffer after a minor collision on Route 216. Walters was fined $25 and costs by Magistrate S. B. Whitehart following arrest by Sheriff Joe Farbearn on Jurgensmier Hill.
Rainy cold weather kept many downtown shoppers away while a Logan Chamber of Commerce Christmas music program drew a sizable crowd. The Trinity Lutheran Choir performed from St Matthew Church with a special telephone wire link to an amplifier above the courthouse, and a 9 PM broadcast from Ohio Power. The program featured the Logan Central Grade School instrumental group under James D. Horwell along with the Central School ensemble.

Bricker declares relief problems solved for the year in a Cincinnati radio address while Toledo’s Industrial Union Council warns of actual starvation in Ohio and asks President Roosevelt for aid. Dayton also seeks state funds for relief as a conference in the city considers issuing $227,000 in bonds to finance relief efforts.
Columbus Ohio December 20 AP The governor announces a three day Christmas holiday for state employees from Saturday through Monday marking a pause in official duties and offices statewide.
Frank G. Brown Logan postmaster reports outgoing mail volume far exceeds 1938 and the last four years. This week promises a bigger day with higher first class mail and parcel post counts than last year. The office stays open late but no regular deliveries on Christmas Day. Special deliveries perishables and gifts will be delivered Christmas afternoon.
In Buenos Aires Captain Hans Langsdorff, commander of the battleship Graf Spee, shot himself after the ship was scuttled off Montevideo. The German embassy confirmed his death, praising his sacrifice for the Fatherland as German ships face intensified wartime losses across the Atlantic.
