The Spanish fascist cruiser Espana fired two shells into the Musel port near Gijon. One shell hit water 500 yards from the American gunboat Erie. the other whistled overhead into the hills. The Erie suffered no damage and Washington said no action would be taken.

A resident, Hoffman, said he dozed and woke to flames in his room.
In Calcutta an underground blast at the Poidih Colliery near Asansol on the East Indian railway left E. Dobbs, European manager, and about 150 miners feared dead. Conflicting reports delayed confirmation.
John D. Reid of Laurelville sues Nelson Karshner Jr. for $10,000 after a Nov. 9 assault at the Karshner home where Reid says he was struck on the head with a club and left permanently disabled. Karshner is jailed on assault and battery charges awaiting grand jury action.

Trenton dispatch reports Brunette, a mid western desperado, sentenced to life after capture in a dramatic New York gun battle. He will be eligible for parole in 15 years and was moved from Mercer county jail to an undisclosed federal penitentiary. His reputed partner Merle Vandenbush remains at large as federal agents pursue him nationwide.
Northwest Airlines reported a mail transport ship with a pilot and co pilot from St Paul had not reported since 3 19 A M Pacific near Elk River Idaho several miles off course.
Mrs. William Achauer of Haydenville, mother of Clerk of Courts Charles Achauer, suffered a broken right arm Wednesday when she fell getting out of a truck.
Peter H. Van Horn 48, former president of the National Federation of Textiles, was crushed when his car crashed into a concrete wall on a Palm Beach boulevard curve. Found at 4:35 AM, speedometer showed 71 mph. He lived at the Hotel Plaza in New York and had come to Florida for Christmas with his wife and son. He was born in Logan and attended Ohio State and UC. He served in WW II, and held senior posts in textile and better business groups before a career in New York and California. His wife, the former Helen Prosser of Columbus, has filed for divorce.
Vatican reports doctors prescribe rest for the 79 year old pontiff as he battles illness and fatigue. Dr Arminto Milani urged him to suspend duties and focus on recovery after another troubled night with difficult breathing.
Pittsburgh dispatch reports gray haired Martin Sullivan a 65 year old veteran Duquesne patrolman confessed to killing five persons three women in a revenge bid. District Attorney Andrew Park said Sullivan stalked houses fired from his service pistol claiming he was framed and persecuted then decided to square accounts. The victims included Laura Bacon 53 social worker Mary Vukelja 49 mother Milan Vukelja 19 son and Helen Benda 45.
Lancaster Ohio dispatch reports two 17 year old inmates from Boys Industrial School to face first degree murder charges for slugging guard Hobart B Stewart with an 18 inch wrench. Sedar Sector says he did not intend to kill, claiming he struck once and Stewart died two hours later. Albert Brown Jr. was with him during the escape and recapture.
In Salt Lake City a large air transport plane remains missing after vanishing en route from Angeles to Salt Lake City. The search was narrowed to a 50 mile wide corridor from Lake City south toward the last reported position, as pilot S. J. Sampson led the efforts.
