Ohio corn farmers in 71 counties vote Tuesday on two refer options. The soil bank plan offers $1.31 per bushel price supports and a 51 million acre national allotment, while the allotment plan provides $1.36 per bushel and 37.3 million acres. If the nation does not register a 2-3 vote for the soil bank, the allotment program auto takes effect.
Albert E. Karshner Hocking County ASC chairman lists polling sites for the corn referendum on Tuesday. Voting locations include Gibisonville election house Marion election house Laur elville firehouse and the Stage Coach Inn ASC office with Falls Good Hope Green Ward Starr and Washington townships. Polls will open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Ohio farmers face two 1957 program choices for price supports as the Agriculture Department outlines options in the soil bank. Voters in corn, cotton, rice and peanut sectors decide on base acreage and idle land rules with payments of about 12 dollars per acre annual rent plus cost sharing. Approval requires two thirds voting yes.
Gov. Frank J. Lausche reported total campaign expenses of 28181 for his successful race to the U.S. Senate in Ohio. Opponent Sen. George H. Bender spent 234000. The largest single item was a $1500 loan from Mrs. Ray M. White, wife of Lausche's executive secretary.
Nine deaths and 155 injuries occurred in Hocking County traffic crashes during the first nine months of 1956, a 200 percent increase in fatalities. There were 220 accidents, with property damage totaling 81,777, per Ohio highway safety director U. C. Felty.
Police logged two minor crashes in Hocking County over the weekend including a hit and run on N Mulberry Street and a parking lot collision on E Second Street involving Joseph Mulbauer and Richard Price. No statewide accidents reported by the Athens post. Jackson post reported a fatality in Meigs County when a car hit a tree Friday night, passenger Arthur Ellis of Carpenter Route 1 died. driver Glen Zimmerman of Albany was uninjured.
Lancaster Fairfield County Judge Harry Kilburger granted Dr. Joseph A. Geer a change of venue. Geer, the county coroner, faces 13 counts of falsifying narcotics prescriptions and pleaded innocent. Original trial date was December 18. A new trial site will be announced later this week.
Ohio selective service headquarters announced a January induction call for two Hocking County men. The state quota is 959 men. The youngest registrant must be 22 by January 1, 1957 unless volunteering or delinquent. December call was 1,060. February had 380, the year's low.
A Trans-Canada Air Lines four engined North Star with 62 aboard disappeared during a violent windstorm over south central British Columbia. An aerial search plus ground party were launched at dawn as fuel limits threatened survival. Passengers included four Saskatchewan Interprovincial players headed for the Shrine game.
Rain totals over Thursday to Saturday in Hocking County measured just over an inch at the Rt 75N highway garage gauge. Today brings fair weather with noon temperature around 36. Forecast calls for continued fair skies tonight and Tuesday with higher temps on Tuesday. Yesterday's highs reached 35 at 8 am with most of the day near 34, while last night’s low was 25 and tonight’s expected low is in the 20s.
The forecast projects temperatures 2-4 degrees below normal with highs around 87 in the north and 41 in the south and lows near 25 to 26. Minor daily changes expected as precipitation averages 4 inches near Lake Erie with intermittent snow flurries elsewhere.

Ardmore Oklahoma reports the Air Force received the first of ten new transport planes with a capacity of 400 troops. Plans are being studied for an aerial monster capable of carrying 800 persons. In Cuba, the general staff says troops and Marines killed 23 rebels in the southeast mountains and took 32 prisoners near Guantanamo Bay.
Ten airmen stranded at the South Pole due to engine trouble have repaired their aircraft and flown back to McMurdo Sound base.
President Eisenhower urged free peoples to heed Hungary's brutal crackdown and Russia's denial of basic rights on Human Rights Day. He cited eight years since the UN declaration and listed rights the USSR denies including life liberty due process thought assembly and free expression.
Mayor Francis Myers announced upcoming city service reductions of 25 percent until finances improve. The move follows voters’ failure to pass a 4 mill operating levy in November, which would replace prior levies expiring this year and help cover rising operating costs.

Norfolk pilot Manning Rooks landed a damaged plane by placing its right wing on a moving car driven by Ed Hornbaker.
