A Cleveland power outage affected about 40 000 CEI customers as a switch house fire sparked two blackouts on the East Side and downtown. Emergency crews restored service after 12 hours with buses replacing errant transit and local stations switching to reserve power.
Springfield report states 7 year old John A. Smith died of strangulation. Coroner Austin Richards ruled the death a strangulation and police detained the boy’s mother Minnie Blix 32 and stepfather Roger Blix 21 for questioning with no charges yet filed. Both say the boy hanged himself.
The Ohio Salary Study Commission refused a Chicago drafted plan to eliminate secretary of state attorney general and treasurer offices. It would concentrate duties in a governor appointed administration director for four years. The panel instead seeks a report on staffing levels and will reconsider by December 29. State Auditor Joseph Ferguson halted payments to the Chicago firm.
Raymond L. Grambo, 29, surrendered meekly to police in a Bexley area case where two men allegedly robbed Dr. and Mrs. at their suburban home. An occupant in a trailer cried don’t shoot as officers knocked. The $200 holdup is being investigated.
The legislature approved a 7.8 percent pay hike for state employees costing about 4.9 million dollars. Surveys receive 70 thousand dollars with expected costs around 65 thousand. Commission findings will be submitted to the legislature in January and to the governor. Ohio spends over 265 million yearly to run state government with 35 thousand employees. Proposals include constitutional revision and a new department of administration with six divisions led by a director appointed by the governor.
In Shanghai the death toll from the explosion and sinking of the steamer Kiangya climbs to 3 920 as new figures show 400 percent more Chinese among the missing. The disaster is noted as the worst civil maritime catastrophe in modern history.

Raymond Grambo was arrested in Hocking County years ago by Sheriff Floyd Duffy on breaking and entering linked to the burglary of Charles McCall's filling station in Murray City. A stolen radio and other merchandise were seized in Columbus. Charges against Raymond Grambo were withdrawn after his brother Harry pleaded guilty and was placed on probation.
George M. Curtis and William Hudson owner of the trailer were taken into custody for questioning. Gram bo and Jack D. Fleming are charged with robbing Dr and Mrs Curtis and accused of kidnapping two teen girls to Cincinnati. Grambo says the girls accompanied them voluntarily.
Edgar Bergen announced a temporary retirement from radio after his December 26 program to study television and broader entertainment developments. The ventriloquist, a top star for 12 years, cited industry flux and recent sponsorship setbacks with Standard Brands and Coca-Cola as part of the context. He criticized radio programming like Stop the Music for diverting listeners from quality entertainment.
New York Herald Tribune foreign correspondent Homer Bigart says Hungarian police have ordered him to leave the country by midnight. Bigart, a 1946 Pulitzer Prize winner, arrived in Budapest two weeks ago after reporting from various locations.

Hocking County health authorities seek an unidentified youth believed to have skinned a rabid fox. An Orland resident shot the fox after it attacked a moving car on State Route 56 near Wellston. The carcass was later given to a Coonville youth who likely skinned it. authorities urge anyone who touched the animal to contact the Hocking County health department immediately.
