Egypt orders Soviet and East European closes over peace push
Egypt ordered Soviet consulates and cultural centers outside Cairo closed and cut ties with four East European nations over alleged efforts to undermine Sadat’s peace initiative with Israel. Cabinet spokesman Prime Minister Mamdouh Salem said centers of the Soviet Union Czechoslovakia Poland and East Germany and Soviet consulates in Alexandria Port Said and Aswan would close. Officials in Amman said King Hussein planned talks in Damascus Cairo and possibly Jordon and Saudi Arabia to mend Arab splits as Egypt hosts a preliminary Middle East peace conference in Cairo next week with limited attendance.
