Nineteen Hocking County men leave for Army duty
Nineteen Hocking County selectees, who finished their three week post induction furloughs, departed Saturday morning for Fort Benjamin Harrison Indiana to begin active Army duty. They were inducted at Columbus August 7 and were guests of Logan Post No 78 American Legion before departure. Twenty were scheduled to leave in contingents but one man was granted a delayed stay due to a death.

Pvt. Ray Hammond Jr. 18, stationed at Camp Shelby Mississippi was killed by lightning Friday afternoon during a storm. He was with four men and was the only fatality.
