Joseph J. Colabello, 18, Camp Hocking enrollee, died after tumbling 40 feet from a cliff at Conkle's Hollow. His body was found at the base with a crushed skull and multiple fractures following a fall when a tree he clung to broke away.
A CCC youth Colabello from Mingo Junction Ohio was found dead after an accident at a cliff edge near a camp. Funeral plans are set in Mingo Junction. Ohio’s 89th state fair opened with a record Sunday attendance of 57 883 paid entries and a no passes policy.
Local angler Melrose Harbaugh battled a hefty small mouth bass in the Hocking River below Mulberry Street bridge. The fish snapped the rod tip at the ferrule but Harbaugh landed three nice bass during the rest of the outing.
Eyewitnesses report a near six foot blacksnake attempted to swallow its opponent in a combat near the Jim Hurley residence. The event was described as a tactical victory and a meal, witnessed as authentic by locals in Haydenville.
J. W. Patton of Haydenville supports a father’s theory that encouraging a son to smoke until ill cures the desire to smoke. While in Hocking County oilfields he tried smoking and quickly felt nauseous and heady. He quit, gave away the pipe, and never repeated the experiment.
The Daily News Window Museum features a freak egg laid by a Rhode Island Red hen owned by Mrs. Rose Poling of Logan Route 2. It also exhibits extraordinary tomatoes from Ervin Keels Haydenville and Mrs. Pearl Watkins Ed C Paul and Jean Struble of Logan, a giant mango by Catherine Brown Marion Township, a triple potato by Harry Primmer Washington Township, and a cow-faced potato submitted by Edward St. Clair Logan Route 2.

Earlier this month Elsie Lee Stumpp 3 Betty Lou 5 months and Loan 2 died in a ten day span. Doctors say Powhatan water is safe.
Albert Kiesel aged 26 was saved after a five hour swim in rough Lake Erie waters off Cleveland. Coast guardsmen continued seeking the body of his sailboat mate Edward Sadowski, 26, who drowned when they lost grip on an overturned craft about twenty feet from aid.
Game Protector Ed Eberst and four assistants removed more than 30000 fish from Willow Pond near Logan on Saturday and relocated them to the Hocking River to save the basin’s fish. At least 25000 more fish remain to be moved to streams and ponds countywide.
Geneva and Euera Snider of Logan won gold cups at the Twins International Convention in Fort Wayne catching national attention. The Logans, residents for 14 years, were identified as the most identical female twins ages 12 to 21. they previously won a $5 prize at Buckeye Lake and are noted as accomplished vocalists.
Five men were wounded in Bell County near Pineville during a clash between pickets and workers returning to one of two coal mines. County officials said the shooting occurred late yesterday as about 40 National Guardsmen prepared to move in to the strike region following a week of disturbances.
Tom McCaw announced the resignations of Francis Matteson of Athens and Charles T. Berman of Chillicothe both on $1 800 a year salaries. The resignations are effective immediately following suspensions of county office heads on August 2.
Georgetown Ohio funeral services are scheduled tomorrow for Judge L G Quinlin of Brown County probate and juvenile court who died Saturday from a heart ailment.
Delbert D. Bush of Kansas City 26 dies in a test flight crash near Cleveland airport during preparations for Grove and Thompson trophy events. Bush’s name is removed from the race entry list for the upcoming national air races set for September 2 3 4. Witness William A. Tholen 22 from Bush’s aircraft school staff saw the crash.
Navy salvage teams began the final blow and tow operation to raise the submarine Squalus and recover 26 victims from the waters where she has rested since May 23.

Mr and Mrs Frank McBride 166 West Main Street donated a two person inhalator to the Logan Fire Department. The device can deliver straight oxygen or a CO2 oxygen mix and will be kept at the fire house for rapid use. A factory rep will train police and fire personnel this week and a Red Cross first aid course will augment instruction.
A government official states that if Europe enters war President Roosevelt will invoke the neutrality law and press Congress to revise it. The act bans arm shipments to belligerents and seeks repeal for cash and carry sales. The president would act if a state of war exists and might delay in a limited blitzkrieg scenario.
The state Democratic Committee races to collect over 100000 additional signatures within eight days to place a referendum on the remodeled civil service law on the November ballot. County chairs presented petitions with about 25000 names amid a drive launched weeks ago by the party and the provisional state employees association. The law, effective September 6 without enough signatures, would add a third civil service commissioner and empower heads to fire civil workers. Democratic attendees included Ohio National Committeeman Charles Sawyer of Cincinnati and former Lieutenant Governor.
