Emil Benoist 20, a former boxer and son of a local councilman, killed seven including himself along a railroad right of way in Hackettstown and Mansfield Township after a late Friday spree with a .44 caliber rifle. Police say he shot hikers and bikers then shot himself as officers closed in.
President Carter maintains full confidence in Bert Lance after disclosure that Lance pledged the same stock as collateral on two loans. White House briefings failed to settle questions about Lance's actions, while the Senate committee plans early September hearings adding the disclosure to its agenda.
A blaze roared through the top three floors of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, aided by 200 Soviet firefighters and 25 Marines. An electrical fault appeared to start the fire. no serious injuries, though one Marine faced smoke inhalation. The defense, economic, and public affairs sections suffered the most damage as occupants were evacuated and officials reassessed security.
Ambassador Andrew Young and British Foreign Secretary David Owen plan discussions with Robert Mugabe Joshua Nkomo and leaders of five neighboring states to seek support for a proposed one man one vote settlement in Rhodesia. The plan reportedly includes a neutral peace force and gradual demobilization of the Rhodesian army with a British administrator overseeing elections.
A wind storm with funnel clouds swept north central Minnesota causing extensive damage. At Sullivan's Holiday Resort near Brainerd at least 11 were injured as a tornado crushed cabins and campers. Winds damaged mobile home parks and other areas while showers shaded other regions nationally. Temperatures ranged from 40 to 91 degrees across multiple states.
Nixon and his family did not intend to keep about 2 million dollars in gifts from foreign heads of state, aides say. They call allegations of deliberate retention false and note most gifts remain in Washington while a few may be in storage near San Clemente.
