City Council advanced two ordinances for South Logan street and water line work. A 5 2 vote authorized bids for surface treatment on several streets. A second unanimous vote approved hiring an engineer to plan and estimate water line improvements.
Arab ministers in Cairo pledged to mobilize Islamic nations for a summit and to form a joint Arab defense council in November. The communique urged Iran Pakistan Malaysia and Indonesia to join the effort against Israel as U.N. Security Council condemned Israel again over the Jerusalem crisis.
Judge James Stilwell held two men to the Hocking County grand jury on Tuesday. Harley Wing of Laurelville faced a not guilty plea on a charge of failure to provide for a minor child and posted a $300 own bond. John Lott of Union Furnace pleaded not guilty to converting a loaned auto from Herschel Bennington and was released on a $250 own bond.
Two Hocking County 4-H members won Outstanding of the Day awards Tuesday at the Ohio State Fair 4-H Dress Revue. Debbie Good of Logan Lassies and Paula Riley of Sunshine Girls were honored for their entries in Sports Clothes and Complete Costume divisions among 22 county participants.

The Associated Press reports breezy cooler air reached the Pacific Northwest and Northeast while northern New York saw near freezing temperatures before dawn. Warm to muggy conditions spread nationwide with a 74 degree reading at 11:30 a.m. and an overnight low of 47.
Logan attorney seeks party status for Kachelmacher Varicose Veins Research Foundation in probate proceedings. He argues lack of notice and insufficient time to file a memorandum before the August 27, 1969 hearing, urging fairness in a matter involving a claimed two million dollars. Forrest Moore also moves to add state interests and grant 15 days to brief the foundation’s position.
A 1,000 strong march led by 12 motorcycles and the public safety director wound through Pittsburgh downtown and camped outside U.S. Steel headquarters to demand more Negro representation in unions. The peaceful protest followed days of traffic jams and earlier violence as leaders vowed to return daily until their goals are met.
Logan, Laurelville, and Murray City residents will pay more for natural gas starting Sept 1 after an Ohio Education Tax Bill raises the state utility excise tax from 3% to 4%. Columbia Gas of Ohio notes the tax-cost clauses in local contracts pass the $2.48 million annual tax increase to customers with rises of 1.0 cent per 1000 cubic feet in Logan and Laurelville and 14 cents per 1000 cubic feet in Murray City.
A swarm of meteors lit the western skies in California Nevada and Arizona Tuesday night. FAA officials in Phoenix described the spectacle as a sky filled with flying sparks while witnesses compared it to a burning airplane breaking apart in flight.
Sp-4 John Thomas Auker of Company C 1st Battalion 5th Infantry Vietnam earned the Silver Star for bravery on June 5. A 1966 Logan High School graduate, Auker previously received the Purple Heart for wounds on February 23 and showed fearless action to aid a wounded comrade and destroy an enemy rocket position.
Construction of a new bridge over Clear Fork on Old McArthur Rd to replace a span washed out in the 1968 spring flood encounters right-of-way problems. The state highway department deferred bid opening to Oct 7 due to easement issues with Pavlik Emerson and Hartman properties. If easements aren’t secured, appropriation suits may be filed. The project was delayed by a prior injunctive action from Clyde Underwood. county commissioners later settled by paying 75 600 as their share of the Rt 33 bypass costs.
Three hundred more men of the U S 9th Infantry Division flew from Vietnam to Hawaii as part of Nixon’s withdrawal plan. The last unit, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 334, will move to Japan Thursday. Overall 25,000 troops were slated to depart by August end, with about 526,500 U S personnel remaining in Vietnam. In Da Nang and Phu My terror attacks killed and wounded civilians and soldiers, while clashes near Da Nang left several dead and many wounded. In Thailand, withdrawals will likely begin with the 12,000–strong Army support group, with air force personnel and advisers staying put.
