Ford appears set to win the 1976 Republican presidential nomination at the convention after a decisive first test in which Reagan failed to force Ford to name a running mate. AP tallies showed Ford leading, with Reagan pursuing a long-shot bid as party backing coalesced around Ford.
The NDCC reports 3,103 dead and 2,282 missing with 28,716 homeless after quakes and tsunamis along Mindanao. Aid arrives by air from Cotabato to Zamboanga while Navy ships move relief along the coast. President Ford offered U S aid to President Marcos.
Fairfield County sheriff's deputies investigate two separate sightings reported since Aug. 10. A man and his son saw an object rise about 100 feet and vanish toward Bremen. In a second incident, two children found prints in a Bremen cornfield after an unidentified object knocked down corn and left a geometric pattern.
The Ohio House voted 54 to 8 to adjourn the July 20 special session and end Gov. Rhodes Medicaid funding bill. Lawmakers start work on an alternate plan to address the Medicaid deficit.
New York stocks moved higher with the Dow up about a point while advances led declines on the New York Stock Exchange. Housing permits climbed 6 percent in July to the highest level in more than two years, supporting optimism despite political fights over Medicaid funding and state spending cuts. Rhodes administration proposals faced opposition in the House Finance Committee as Democrats pitched a revenue plan to fund Medicaid without cutting other departments. House Finance Chairman Myr H. Shoemaker criticized the administration’s restraint as morally unacceptable.
In Panmunjom, two U.S. Army officers were killed and four American enlisted men wounded when about 30 North Korean guards armed with axes and pikes attacked while Korean service corps workers trimmed trees. A South Korean officer and five others also were impacted as North Korean forces entered the joint security area. The U.N. Command condemned the assault as brutal and unprovoked and noted no North Korean casualties.
A nation wide weather picture shows showers and thundershowers from the Pacific Northwest through California and Rockies, with scattered activity along the Gulf Coast and central plains. Sunny warm conditions prevail in the Hocking Valley with 80s, while Tennessee and Ohio valleys enjoy clear skies. Overnight temps range from 44 in Pellston to 85 in Needles.
Congressman Clarence E. Miller urged private enterprise to drive Appalachia’s growth at an Industrial Day dinner in Hocking Valley. He touted flood control, energy policy, the Appalachian Highway, and local business success like Brooks Shoe Co. while criticizing FCC regulations and costly federal mandates. He praised Nelsonville’s progress and noted the bicentennial year as a time for regional development.
