Huge Balloon Satellite Echo I Seen By Most Viewers

Washington observer Jonathan Blair photographed Echo I from Dearborn observatory. The aluminum coated Mylar satellite 1000 miles out traced a 4600 mile arc across a clear sky. It arrived over the Pacific and set over the Atlantic, appearing as tall as a ten story building.

Railroad Strike Idles 30000 at U S Steel Mills

In Pittsburgh AP reports about 1150 nonoperating employees walked out in a contract dispute, idling five U S Steel mills. The strike shuts down 30000 steelworkers and halts rail service of the company’s Duquesne Homestead Edgar Thomson Irvin and Clairton works after failed talks.
