Ohio's accidental deaths surged to the highest total in over a month with 29 fatalities in 54 hours. Twenty four were on highways in multiple crashes near Mansfield Marysville and Canton, plus 3 youths drowned and a 9 year old girl killed by a fall from a horse.
Logan resident Jack N. Lehman, 25, was injured in a Sunday morning single vehicle crash near Dicken Addition on Clay Bank hill when his car left the road after apparently dozing off. He was treated at Hocking Valley Hospital for facial cuts and bruises and cited for driving without a license. Lehman must appear before Hocking County Judge Vaughn Collins at 7 p.m.
Three men wearing rubber masks robbed Community Traction Co. in Toledo Ohio Sunday night escaping with about 12000 dollars. Local police investigated the garage and nearby streets for clues.
President Eisenhower led the nation in mourning Fleet Adm. William F. Halsey who died at 76 in Fishers Island New York of a heart attack while vacationing. The admiral famed for his Pacific campaigns earned praise from Eisenhower MacArthur and Secretary Franke. He leaves a widow a son William F. Halsey III and a daughter Mrs Preston L Spruance.
Six men who filed petitions to run as township constables in the November election saw their names disqualified after the secretary of state ruled the office becomes appointive by township trustees under a new law. The Aug. 5 filing deadline missed the Nov 6 effective date, so no ballots will list their names. The county board keeps the filing fees totaling 86 dollars. Candidates affected include Raymond Amos and Charles H Stephenson in Falls Two Jesse F McGrady Jr in Good Hope Two William E Smith and Laird Prauden in Ward Two and Cecil L Burke in Green Two.
The Senate began consideration of a 1.05 billion dollar housing bill to replace Eisenhower’s vetoed measure. The bill, trimmed from 1.375 billion, keeps main programs in reduced form and may go to the House under a two thirds suspension if act promptly.
NEW LEXINGTON The Peabody Coal Co of St Louis has bought the Sunnyhill Coal Co and Sunnyhill Coal Sales Co for about 4.5 million dollars. The deal includes 26 000 acres of strip mine holdings in Perry and Athens counties. Production reached 1 200 000 tons last year and about 250 people are employed. Peabody will assume control on Sept 1.
AFL CIO leaders meet at Forest Park to salvage a labor bill after a House defeat. They favor the Kennedy Ervin Senate version over Landrum Griffin and plan to push political action to defeat Democratic Republican coalition lawmakers in 1960. Resolving jurisdictional feuds, unions face NLRB moves allowing workers to change unions.
City Council will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. today on proposed rules for the City Planning Commission. The regulations, adopted under state law, will give the city planning commission wide authority over the platting of new subdivisions inside the city and in a three mile area beyond.
Geraldine Neff of South Gate faced two failed engagements due to auto crashes. In 1958 her fiancé John Fulton was paralyzed before their June 29 wedding. Three months ago he ended the engagement. She later became engaged to Cecil Roberts. Last Friday she died in a solo crash near Las Vegas while to have married Roberts.
Norway Anne Marie Rasmussen names her 19 year old sister Thorhild as maid of honor for her wedding to Steven Rockefeller this Saturday. She also selects five school friends as bridesmaids.
The Thomas A. Powner family survived a 336 hour isolation in a 72 square foot atom bomb shelter at Princeton University. They faced heat and odor, managed limited water and food, and were monitored on tape for safety. The parents praised the experience as beneficial and offered ideas for improving shelter life.
Premier Michel Debre declares France will demand complete support from allies for its Algerian war. He ties France’s destiny to Algeria and says Paris seeks an equal voice with the United States and Britain in Atlantic Alliance decisions ahead of De Gaulle’s meeting with Eisenhower.

Sheriff A. J. Waldron reports vandals threw rocks through two Enterprise school windows over the weekend. Nine other panes were smashed at East Hocking school last week as vandals used rocks and beer bottles. Deputies have been unable to identify the culprits.
