Stanley McCall, receiver, announces a final dividend of 1182 per cent for proven claimants. Distribution begins Thursday at 9 A M from the Arcade building. Depositors will have recovered 68.82 per cent total. prior payments were 20 10 14 6 and 7 per cent.
Franco’s forces launched a five directional assault on Santander as insurgent tacticians predicted the Biscayan capital would fall within a week. One column reportedly breached Escudo Pass and neared the coast, with seven government battalions said trapped and government casualties in the thousands.
In Weirton West Virginia Aug 17 the CIO badges marked witnesses as the national labor board probes Weirton Steel over alleged terrorism charges. About 300 witnesses queued as Walter Bambrick a former employee testified the company funded charities built a stadium and school facilities and dominated town life since 1910.
In St Clairsville Ohio on August 17 AP report Coroner C C Hardesty returned a death by own action verdict. Clara Amos aged 16 started a fire with kindling then lay down in it and was fatally burned. She had been in ill health and ran onto the street where she died before help could arrive.
Constance Worth files answer in Los Angeles denying nullity of her Tijuana marriage to actor George Brent. Worth says the union was valid and entered in good faith by both, and that they lived together afterward.
Washington reports dissatisfied Democrats move to salvage the Wage-Hour bill and seek 10 million dollars for farm tenancy loans and retirement of submarginal land. A caucus petition asks for a study of ways to bring the bill to the floor as Congress races to finish the session. The Senate debates Black's Supreme Court nomination amid stiff opposition.
In Cleveland on August 17 CIO affiliated unions won two of three elections in local knitting mills, one victory by a margin of four votes, challenging AFL organizations in the same industry.
Common Pleas Judge Harrison W. Jewell ordered Mayor James E. Ford removed from office in Chillicothe after a Citizens committee charged him with permitting slot machines. Ford and attorney Earl D. Parker said they would appeal, pending permission from the Ohio Court of Appeals. The decision cited enforcing laws and public policy against gambling in public spaces. Ford had won renomination in the Democratic primary, but attorneys warned the ruling would not affect his candidacy.
Police in Chicago order roundup of Black suspects after intruder assaults Virginia Austen, a 25 year old New York artist, in her hotel room. Austen was struck with a brick and left insensible during the incident.
The bullet pierced body of 35 year old Albert Gooden was found hanging beneath a highway bridge 12 miles east of Covington Tenn. Gooden, accused of killing Marshal Chester Doyle, was seized by six masked men while being moved from Memphis to Covington for a hearing. The sheriff did not identify the attackers or their car.
Michael Bowers aged 61 died at 3 AM at the Hocking county Home after three years as a bed patient. Services are set for Thursday at 10 AM at Heinlein Funeral Home with burial in Ewing. He is survived by four siblings William Bowers Mrs. Thomas Cook J E Bowers and Mrs. Della Bangert.
Aviators from the United States Russia and Canada gathered on the Arctic rim to search for six missing Russian transport fliers. Storms grounded the effort as Jimmy Mattern and other pilots prepared to fly from Alaska and Siberia toward Cape Wellen and the northern coast.
Northern Kentucky police sought a Black man after a 23 year old Covington stenographer was attacked and her escort threatened with a pistol. A man named Donald Lettimore, 25, was charged with rape and armed robbery and admitted being at the scene but claimed the victim was attacked by the other man.
Miss Mary Tolbert was taken to the Home of the Good Shepherd in Columbus this morning for rest and treatment.
In New York on August 17 AP reports 70 year old Max Berger sat on a subway plucking a live four pound rooster given by a friend. He claims he can pluck a canary without harming it while a passenger challenges him. Police intervene and the bird is killed.
A senate showdown over Senator Black D Ala for the Supreme Court drew Republicans and old line Democrats to the floor in a last minute bid to defeat confirmation. Senator Copeland NY opened by tying Black to the Klan movement, saying no one linked to the Klan is fit for the tribunal.
In Columbus the Ohio Department of the American Legion chose a new commander as three candidates James V Suhr Eli Jensen and Robert Roberts competed with Sam H Cobb retiring. The auxiliary commander is unopposed Mrs M E Simpson. Cincinnati slated to host next year. A resolution sought to bar Legion uniform or insignia at strike meetings with immediate discipline for violations.
Gov. Martin L. Davey called a conference at the executive mansion for Wednesday with Democratic leaders of the fourth Congressional district to discuss a possible special primary and election to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Frank L. Kloeb of Celina. Kloeb will be sworn in as a federal judge in the northern Ohio district in Toledo Friday.
Hollywood report notes James Wallington, announcer, and his wife Betty Jane Cooper welcomed an 8 pound daughter last night. Betty Jane Cooper formerly of George White's Scandals, is named as the mother.
Cincinnati dispatch reports Mrs Anna Hahn in custody awaiting arraignment on two murder indictments. Grand jury accuses the former housemaid of malicious and premeditated deaths of George Gsellman 67 and Jacob Wagner 78 linked to poison traces found in organs. Bodies exhumed after prosecutor Outcalt ordered review.
Opal Sturgell 18 year old Berea College sophomore was slain on campus as police seek George Wells 20 a Berea senior on a warrant signed by M L Sturgell. William Anderson 18 Berea Academy student identified Wells as the slayer. Police Chief Earl T Hays said precautions were taken to prevent vigilant violence.

Federal Communications Commissioner George H Payne reported a refusal from Powel Crosley Jr WLW president to answer questions about WLW 500000 watt operation The commissioner said the station used its experimental license to earn profits Crosley defended the high power saying the experiment proved benefit for remote and rural service.
