German troops flee Sicily as some 80 ships ferry forces across the Messina Strait while 500 anti aircraft guns and Allied airmen defend the crossing. Shore battles intensify as British American and Canadian troops advance through rugged terrain.
Allied forces pressed from Milazzo toward Messina as the Seventh Army swept a port key and the Eighth Army advanced toward Taormina. German retreat was aided by roads and bridges being blown, while air raids targeted northern Italy and Rome area.
From the Hocking Sentinel files dated August 12 1842 a camp meeting is set for Friday September 2 on the old camp grounds near Frederick Hood's along the Logan Adelphi road with a ban on traffickers within two miles. Also notes a U S Army letter home and a county sports tidbit about Noah Carpenter 85 preparing for county championship with a horse fly record and a homely jig.

The Office of Price Administration said loose shoe stamps detached from ration books may only be used for genuine mail order purchases. An amended regulation bars selecting shoes in a store and mailing the stamp for delivery.
Washington reports Axis U-boats destroyed at about one per day for three months, with six American warships lost in 60 days. May through July saw over 90 U-boats sunk. U.S. submarines continue to damage Japanese shipping, with 217 Japanese vessels sunk since the war began, and 29 possibly sunk, 63 damaged.
Cleveland police report 17 year old Henry Hagert has signed a confession to a third murder. He admits killing 15 year old Edgar Bowen last March and the two Collins brothers in Bay Village. Hagert, a reform school parolee, was implicated in the Buchan assault and previously served an auto theft term. He predicts a long sentence.
Gustavus A. Anderegg, engineer for Western Electric Bell laboratories who supervised laying two oceanic cables, has died at age 70 in Columbus Ohio. He was an Oberlin College graduate and served as assistant professor of electrical engineering at Ohio State University from 1903 to 19.
At the 4th annual Fraternal Order of Eagles convention in Chicago on August 16, William P. Wetherald of Zanesville was chosen grand treasurer and Edward F. Ross of Toledo named grand trustee.
