Ohio investigators report stark abuse findings at 29 mental institutions. In Toledo and Hawthornden, a physician allegedly socialized with youths and took trips with male patients while staff used alcohol and drugs and stole from patients. Department says most problems are being corrected.

Tragic drowning of 10 year old at Buck Run Creek Rockbridge

A 10 year old girl Timmie Ann Davis of Rockbridge Rt 1 drowned in Buck Run Creek near Rockbridge around 6 p.m. Thursday. Dale Miller and John Wharton, both of Rockbridge, tried to rescue her before deputies arrived and began investigation into underage swimming.

The Republican Platform Committee reversed a preliminary decision and voted to support the Equal Rights Amendment. It faces pressure to adopt tougher positions on the Panama Canal and Africa diplomacy as a convention draft is prepared.

Carbon Hill Man Celebrates Friday the 13th Birthday

Edward Dawley of Carbon Hill turns 73 on Friday August 13 1976. He recalls Navy photographers once questioned his birthday and later published words he says he never spoke. A photographer with a mirror and ladder symbolized bad luck on a different Friday the 13th. Dawley says he has no superstitions despite the date.

Sanitary Sewer Pre-Payment Deadline Monday

County auditor Leonard Myers warns that the 4 p.m. Monday deadline for West Logan sanitary sewer pre payments must be met in the Courthouse office. Unpaid assessments will be added to property taxes over 20 years. About $46,000 of the $262,000 project cost has been collected so far.

Refinery Blast at Tenneco Tower Kills Eleven

Eleven workers died and at least ten were injured when a 30 story Tenneco Oil refinery tower exploded. Two more possible deaths remained unconfirmed as crews searched the wreckage. Officials cited maintenance work and possible gas leak as factors while the refinery reported no blast last week.

Brewer Low Bidder On Streets Project

F H Brewer Co of Lancaster was the apparent low bidder when sealed proposals were opened for street resurfacing under the city improvement program. Weather outlook for Hocking Valley turns cooler this weekend

Mostly cloudy conditions and cooler temperatures are forecast for tonight and Saturday in the Hocking Valley. Highs near the lower 80s and overnight lows around 60s, with a 40 percent rain chance tonight dropping to 30 percent Saturday. At 11 a.m. today the temperature was 78 under cloudy skies after an overnight low of 65. Thursday’s high reached 87.
