Official Weather Bureau summary notes scattered thunderstorms Wednesday evening bringing up to an inch of rain to downtown Columbus and 1.7 inches in the northwest suburbs. Sedalia southwest of Washington Court House logged 1.11 inches. Findlay reported
Skies clear and temperatures fall this afternoon and tonight in the Hocking Valley. Today’s high mid 70s with 73 degrees logged at 11 a.m. Overnight low 59 after a 83 degree high yesterday. Rain totals include 0.75 inch at Logan and 0.11 inch at Nelsonville in the 24 hours to 8 a.m. Mud in the Hocking River early morning with only a slight water rise.
Rain totals were light in parts of northern counties with about one tenth inch. Northern areas saw little or no rain as skies remained cloudy statewide except in the far northwest. Dense fog reduced visibility to zero at Dayton while central counties stayed generally foggy. Temperatures were cool with Toledo at 56, Columbus 60, and Findlay 58 as high pressure promises fair skies and below normal temperatures through Friday.
A storm dropped up to 1.7 inches of rain in Columbus causing flooded underpasses and water-logged cars. A shorted air raid siren in Bexley triggered numerous fire department calls, and a flaming truck car crash occurred on Olentangy River Road.
Akron detectives have questioned many friends relatives and neighbors of Mr and Mrs Arnold Starcher about their missing 1 year old daughter Joanne. The bed was empty when a noise was heard outside their East Akron apartment Tuesday night. No motive clear, ransom unlikely, doors unsecured. Starcher works at an auto plant.
SAN DIEGO AP reports the aircraft carrier Bennington and destroyer Edwards collided Wednesday during refueling 175 miles off the California coast. Navy spokesman says there were no injuries.
Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold leads a U N task force toward Katanga to oversee a withdrawal of Belgian troops and assure orderly reception for Swedish forces said to arrive Friday. Lumumba appeals for unity as Congo police and soldiers mobilize amid rioting and tension in Leopoldville.
Holoman Air Force Base officials say Air Force Captain Joe Kittinger will attempt another high altitude jump on August 16 from an undisclosed height. His December 11 jump was from 74 700 feet.
Fidel Castro denounced Church criticism of his government arguing that condemning revolution betrays Christ. He blamed U.S. embassy influence and Franco backed priests for anti-revolution protests and warned of retaliation if church attacks continue. The speech followed a pastoral note warning of rising communism in Cuba.

A derailment three miles southwest of Athens on the New York Central blocked tracks and forced diversions over the C&O route via Kanauga Dun das McArthur Logan and Lancaster to Columbus. No injuries were reported though 300 feet of track were ripped up and coal dumped from gondola cars. Officials expect reopening late today.
The Laos rebel leadership led by paratroop Capt. Kong Le announces in Saigon that the coup has succeeded and the population backs the movement. The 40 member executive committee will govern temporarily and officers from various services pledge loyalty to the revolution, which claims no foreign support. Reports conflict on loyalist high ranking officers and possible resistance by Gen. Phoumi Nosavan.
Maj. Gen. Loren G. Windom announced 43 fixed radiological monitoring stations will be installed in Hocking County to alert residents to radiation danger in an atomic attack. The program aims to provide emergency information via radio and other channels and to guide shelter and rehabilitation operations after a nuclear event. Ohio will add about 2,150 fixed stations in the first year with a nationwide total near 6,460 in Ohio and 150,000 across the U S over three years.
Ralph R. Windsor, 65, of Logan Rt. 4, died at 3 30 p m yesterday in University Hospital Columbus where he had been admitted four days earlier. He was a WWI veteran, retired farmer and carpenter, member of the Disabled American Veterans and Presbyterian Church. Surviving include wife Dorothy a son James a daughter Mrs Dorothy Imboden a brother Leslie and four sisters. Funeral 2 p m Saturday Heinlein Funeral Home burial Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today.
Robert E. Hamilton, 37, a booting company employee, called police to surrender as an Ohio parole violator. Traced by police, Hamilton was taken into custody hours later after fleeing parole in 1955. He had moved to Texas with his wife and four children, saying he turned himself in to ensure his kids would know him.
The Agriculture Department estimates Ohio will harvest 61 bushels of corn per acre, totaling 242,048,000 bushels in 1960. Winter wheat 35 bushels per acre yielding 43,235,000 bushels, oats 60 with 62,700,000, soybeans 26 yielding 40,560,000, tobacco 1506 pounds per acre totaling 20,750,000 pounds, and sugar beets 15.5 tons per acre totaling 341,000 tons.
The Washington Evening Star reports four Soviet military attaches spent three days in the capital collecting arms and defense information while the U S air attache was expelled from Moscow on espionage charges.
State Auditor James A. Rhodes announced a record distribution of local government funds totaling over 30 million dollars, the largest single statewide transfer to municipalities to date.

Vanderberg Air Force Base reports Discoverer XUL launched into polar orbit to recover a 300 pound capsule. After 17 orbits a radio trigger will attempt recovery, using rockets to slow the capsule and planes and ships to snag it for eventual manned spaceflight goals.
Cape Canaveral reports that after two prior failures the Air Force successfully fired the Titan intercontinental range missile. The test covered a 5,000 mile trajectory, marking a major milestone for the program.
Brooklyn police smashed a junior Apalachin crime school run by top mobsters. Twenty two suspects were arrested for burglaries netting about half a million dollars over two years. A 17 year old victim was slain in a gangland style attack linked to the case.
The International Typographers Union began a strike at the Fostoria Review Times after Local 260 members voted Wednesday night to walk out amid contract negotiations breakdown. ITU international representative Robert Ameln stated the walkout halted paper operations in Fostoria, Ohio.
