On the Cuff Joseph H Ijams advertises a new mercantile shop at No 1 McCann's Row offering cheap goods and a broad cloth assortment. Clerks are Messrs Van Sant and Gallagher and a well supplied ladies department is noted with items feminine shoppers seek.
The deadly amanita mushroom, the avenging angel, is abundant in Hocking County and may be large in size. It has caused many deaths, with no known cure yet, as medical science warns of its fatal poison. OPA tire rationing officials report Grade II tires scarce and urge dealers with Grade III stock to contact local boards to aid essential vehicle needs.

Hary DeVaul, 37, of Swanton died in Toledo hospital from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Toledo on Monday. He passed away today in the hospital. The crash occurred near the city limits earlier in the week.
A truck auto collision east of Lima Ohio killed Lon Spradlin aged 21 a war worker from near McGuffey. The accident occurred Aug 11 and the victim was employed in war production.
Arthur W. Williams led the Youngstown Republican mayoral race by 221 votes, 5 368 to 5 147, in the first city primary after the charter repeal. Akron's George J. Harter won renomination in a Democratic primary, while Charles E. Slusser led the GOP in Akron. Lancaster re nominated Mayor William J. Belhorn after defeating Charles W. White. Fred von Stein claimed the Republican mayoralty nomination.
A Detroit fact finding committee says the June riots were not planned or enemy inspired. It cites racial tension inflamed by separate incidents provoked by a group of negroes and a false rumor about a white killing at Belle Isle as triggers.

The State Highway Department reminds over two million drivers that major amendments to motor vehicle law take effect September 20. If a court judgment is won against a driver for a traffic accident, the driver must satisfy the judgment or lose driving rights for five years. License suspension requires notice and a 30 day period to satisfy or appeal. suspension ends once the judgment is satisfied.
Five year old Paul Fedor died after falling from a bicycle handlebars beneath a truck in Conneaut Ohio. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fedor.
The Ohio American Legion backed the Ball Burton Senate bill calling the U S to take the initiative on postwar problems. At a three day war conference delegates approved the bill’s objectives by resolution. New commander Rossiter C Williams and officers were elected. Milt Campbell urged leaving liquor laws unchanged until service members return.
Labor circles report 15 non operating railroad unions reached a contract with carriers granting the full 8 cent hourly increase urged by the emergency board. The deal will go to President Roosevelt for approval. The unions had asked for 20 cents and a minimum wage of 70 cents per hour.
Sun Glow Industries on Motherwell Avenue will hold an honor roll dedication and Minute Man Flag presentation Thursday at 7 30 P M. The event honors 52 employees in uniform and includes presenting the Treasury Department flag to the Sun Glow plant and workers. The plant earned the Minute Man Flag for 100 percent Payroll War Savings participation. D W Miller chairs the Victory Committee, with nine committee members from Local 290 UFCW. Henry Dague serves as MC, with speeches by Jake Klayman and C Wood Bowen and James L Young presenting the flag. Leaders include Leonard McKinley’s father, a POW, who will supervise the flag raising as the anthem is sung.
American and Marine troops seal off Bairoko Harbor on New Georgia Island, forming a semicircular trap two miles southeast of the harbor. The garrison, short of food and ammo, may attempt a night escape across Kula Gulf as U S forces tighten the ring. Pacific air attacks widen as Salamaua base is bombarded and Kiska remains a subject of speculation about an impending assault.
A Tokyo broadcast quoted the Japanese Navy Department asserting 152 Allied naval units sunk 48 damaged and 2 580 Allied planes shot down with 305 destroyed or damaged on the ground since the war began The report suggested these figures were exaggerated compared with actual Allied losses in the Pacific.
Fred B. Cramer, 61, retired president of Monarch Products Co., died of a heart attack while driving in nearby Tonogo. His death occurred August 11 in Titin. He was survived by his wife and two children.
