Mrs. Katie Michel Snyder 64 of N Walnut Street Road died at 6 a.m. today at Hocking Valley Hospital after a brief illness. A Sistersville West Virginia native, she lived in Logan over 50 years and belonged to St. Matthew Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving: husband Charles, son Lorn of Lancaster, four grandchildren. Funeral 10 a.m. Monday Heinlein Funeral Home. Burial Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Friday.
Mexican officials showed little enthusiasm over a U N report that Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev plans to attend the 150th anniversary of Mexican independence on September 16 Sources in New York said Khrushchev notified Mexico he would represent the Kremlin at the celebration
Elmer Kirchner, a Kingston New York dairy farmer, chose confinement over paying federal income taxes he claims unconstitutional. He resisted since 1956 and defied a court order prompting deputy marshals to arrest him. he remained jailed for contempt until he cooperates with IRS inquiries.
In Ohio the Department of Mental Hygiene and Correction plans a prison honor camp at Gallipolis State Hospital in Gallia County. Officials visited to inspect buildings for dormitories and estimate 50 to 60 men will be housed in the initial move.
Raul Castro defended Fidel Castro’s health and leadership at a late night Red Congress gathering. He dismissed illness rumors and warned critics and international press that Fidel would strike back strongly, citing forthcoming Official Gazette laws possibly targeting Americans.

In Rangeley Maine a 12 foot 200 pound robot covered in green scales was found in a restaurant walk in refrigerator. Barbara Brackett brushed it and triggered the machine causing panic as about 25 patrons fled. Builder James Marshall created it for a traveling show over two years and tested cold climate operation in the fridge. Restaurant owner Elmer Grant condemned the incident and wishes not to see Marshall again.
Elmira Star-Gazette reports a humorous survey of children age six to ten in tents and backyards about world affairs and politics. The piece notes their literal, simple answers on Khrushchev, Washington, Eisenhower, and the Senate, with a recurring image of a mayor equated to a horse.
Severe thunderstorms pummeled the Midwest and Great Lakes causing deaths and injuries. A Decatur construction worker died as winds up to 50 mph toppled a half completed warehouse. Showers were seen in the Hocking Valley and Logan area with very light rain in parts. Nelsonville recorded 24 inch rainfall while the temperature reached 82 degrees at 10 am after a low of 68 overnight. Wednesday’s high reached 90 at 2 30 pm with scattered thundershowers forecast for this evening and Friday expected to be fair with little temperature change.
A cool front stretched east to west across northern Ohio this morning while drier air moves southward Friday. Today the state remains warm and humid with generally widespread afternoon thunderstorms. Reports show Delaware 1.7 inches, Cleveland 1.2 inches, Columbus and Toledo about 0.7 inch.
Gov. Michael V. DiSalle recommends Senator John F. Kennedy visit Logan and four Ohio counties during the presidential campaign. The move follows DiSalle’s talks with Kennedy at Hyannis Port and aims to target counties that have supported winners since 1932, including Hocking, Pickaway, Brown and Lucas.

In Palmyra New York the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints stages its annual America’s Witness for Christ pageant at a 100 acre amphitheater with 50 000 seats. About 650 performers and technicians present epics from the Book of Mormon including an ancient migration from Palestine in 600 B C. The 130th anniversary year adds significance as Gerald G Smith notes.
