Woman badly hurt in two car Logan crash and more
A 76 year old Pomeroy widow Estella Walburn was seriously injured in a two car crash at Front Street and Hocking Avenue in Logan at 5 34 p m Saturday. Her daughter in law Mabel Walburn 54 of Columbus was hurt and taken to Hocking Valley Hospital with a fractured knee cap and multiple rib fractures. The other driver Freda Hicks 38 of 661 West Hunter Street was not seriously injured. The Walburn car struck a residence then damaged several homes on Front Street. Hicks was cited for failure to yield the right of way. A second injury report concerns Mary V West 29 of Rockbridge Road 2 who was injured on Poling Road in a one car crash near Lancaster Fairfield Hospital. The weekend patrols also logged two car crashes near Diamond roadside park and a hit and run at Gus Billiards. Arrests included Chester Speelman 48 Logan Route 4 fined, and others for red lights and reckless operation.

Burning victim found on hospital lawn linked to racketeers
Frank Kierdorf 56, a Flint Teamsters business agent, was dumped on the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital lawn in Pontiac with burns covering about 85 percent of his body. He and his uncle Herman Kierdorf, a Detroit Teamsters official, testified previously before Senate racketeering investigators and invoked the Fifth Amendment. Police described possible deliberate ignition as Kierdorf, delirious and in shock, offered only uncertain identity. Both men are former armed robbers. Herman resigned after testimony and Hoffa ally status was noted.

Maimed Boy May Yet Lead Normal Life

Logan Boy Sent To BIS By Juvenile Judge Rhea Bangert Brown
A 16 year old Logan boy was sentenced to the Boys Industrial School after a July 29 incident near Newark in which he and a Newark youth were shot at while fleeing a farm gas theft attempt. The Newark youth received probation. The case follows a prior suspended sentence for sodomy involving seven youths and four men.

Skeleton Found in Italian Mine Dates 11 Million Years
In Grosseto Italy miners unearthed a nearly complete child-sized skeleton 600 feet underground in the Bacinello coal mine. Swiss scientist Dr Johannes Hurzeler of Basel claims the bones push the origin of man back to at least 11 million years ago, possibly before apes. The find, with two miners present, lacks a skull but includes limbs, spine, ribs and pelvis.
