City residents urged to conserve water as one of two wells at the waterworks was shut down for repairs and possible casing replacement. C E Records of Columbus handles the work. If demand remains normal no emergency should arise. each well yields 950 gallons per minute while normal use runs 900 gallons per minute.
Walter Reuther leader of the United Auto Workers asserts organized labor will back the Kennedy Johnson ticket. He spoke with Senator Kennedy at Kennedy's Hyannisport home and touted the two candidates while noting unemployment concerns and a potential third Eisenhower Nixon recession.
In Cincinnati AP State notes defense to save Edythe Klumpp from the electric chair will be carried to the U S Supreme Court Friday. Attorney William F Hopkins plans the latest appeal after Ohio Supreme Court denial. The case dated to the 1958 killing of Mrs Louise Bergen with Mrs Klumpp former companion.
Theodore J. Good told the West Hocking school board he will resign soon as Rockbridge principal after a dispute over hiring policies. The board postponed action on his resignation, while two new teachers were hired for Rockbridge and Gibisonville. The district also filled several positions, including a bus driver and several grade teachers, and discussed a six cent discount for gasoline supplies.
At Cape Canaveral the Navy fired another Polaris submarine rocket, launching from an underground tube and traveling over 1100 miles down the Caribbean range. Project officials called the test completely successful as the ninth launch in four weeks and the 28th of the year, with twenty successes.
A white albino sparrow feeds daily with a flock behind Keynes Bros. mill in Logan. Ohio Power Co. substation workers report the bird appears each morning to eat wheat spilled from trucks unloading at the mill. This is the first albino sparrow reported in the area.
National Guard trucks stood by to evacuate residents along the Hillsborough River if needed as floods from a tropical storm Brenda receded. The Red Cross cited 50 to 100 homes evacuated. rainfall in four days reached 15.87 inches. Damage and high tides affected other Bay area communities.
President Eisenhower to receive a NATO briefing this afternoon from Supreme Commander General Lauris Norstad in Newport Rhode Island. Norstad oversees allied forces in Europe, a position Ike held as first NATO commander before his 1952 presidential run.
Vice President Richard Nixon flies to Honolulu to kick off his presidential drive in Hawaii becoming the first candidate to seek votes there. Nixon and Pat greet photographers before boarding a chartered plane for a tour tied to his West Coast and Pacific campaign.
The Labor Department issued its second bi monthly listing of areas with substantial and chronic unemployment. Major changes added three areas to the substantial group and removed one. Youngstown Warren Ohio shifted to substantial unemployment with 9 to 12 percent jobless. Lorain Elyria Ohio moved to 6 to 9 percent. Steubenville Weirton Ohio W Va dropped to moderate. Five smaller areas added Hopkinsville Owensboro Paducah Lake Charles East Liverpool Salem Ohio. Ashland and Mansfield removed. Lorain Elyria added to major areas.
Official Weather Bureau summary notes mostly cloudy skies over Ohio Tuesday night with general thunder showers in the northern half. Warm and humid conditions continued with hot muggy air this morning in the Hocking Valley. Scattered thundershowers are forecast this afternoon and tonight. Temperatures at 11 am were 68, with an early low of 67. yesterday’s high reached 93.
Temperatures mostly in the 70s with high humidity. At dawn rain was reported in Youngstown Akron Cleveland Findlay and Toledo. Low pressure is organizing in the northern plains and warm humid conditions will continue in Ohio through Thursday with occasional showers and thunderstorms.
Raul Chivas treasurer of the Cuban revolution and railroad administrator fled Fidel Castro's government and reached Key West aboard a 17 foot boat. He offered no immediate reason for defection though former associates cited growing discontent with communistic leanings.
The Soviet bloc urged a general boycott of the U.N. Disarmament Commission meeting set for Aug. 15 to consider the U.S. armament proposal. Nine Communist delegations visited Asian and African missions urging abstention and promoted a rival plan for a summit conference of all U.N. members in September. Diplomatic sources noted many delegations agreed to attend but some questioned the value of a meeting without the two big armed camps. The State Department affirmed the Aug. 15 plan despite Soviet pressure and noted any head of government could attend the commission meeting without blocking a General Assembly disarmament discussion.
The United Steelworkers union announced a strike at Pittsburgh Steel Co next Sunday over incentive wage scales. The firm began an orderly shutdown of five plants after a five day notice, affecting about 7 700 workers across Monessen Allenport Warren Akron and Worcester.
Otto H. Hartmann, 75, of 229 East St. died at 2 a m today at Broad Way Nursing Home in Lancaster after years of poor health. He was a Logan native and former tool dresser and driller in Oklahoma oil fields. He retired last year as custodian of the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Logan. Surviving: son Otto Hartmann Jr. in Jacksonville Fla., two brothers, two sisters, and three grandchildren. Funeral 2 p m Saturday at Leonard Funeral Home. Oak Grove Cemetery burial. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday.
Ronald Marvin Sinnott 23 of 323 North Street suffered a fractured jaw and facial burns when a half pound block of dynamite exploded during a Fort Knox field exercise in Kentucky. He was improving after hospital treatment as investigators probe the blast cause. His brother Donald Sinnott works as an advertising sales man-compositor at the Logan Daily News.
A new four lane section of U S Route 33 opens from Hocking County to Lancaster as part of a wider superhighway plan. The ceremony featured Congressman Walter Moeller and Rep. James Lantz cutting the ribbon with Amelia George of Pleasantville crowned Miss Southeastern Ohio attending as First Traveler.
The Ohio Health Department reports six new polio cases, bringing the yearly total to 13. Last year at this time the state had over 50 cases, with recent infections in Cuyahoga, Montgomery, Ross, Van Wert, and Warren counties.
Army investigators study the feasibility of recovering six airmen killed in a World War II B24 crash in the Sierra Mountains near Fresno. The 194? wreckage was found by a state ranger. two Ohioans Lt. Charles W. Turvey and Sgt. Howard A. Wandpke were aboard. Reporter Fred Goerner and diver Bob Fisher described the scene, noting preserved wreckage and bodies despite deep icy waters.
Premier Tshombe announced Katanga would mobilize all able bodied men to oppose the U N force scheduled to enter. He said Katanga will not fire first but will defend against what he calls aggression if U N troops land, while Bunche travels to Elisabethville for talks.
