Nixon states Lodge will not engage in campaigning while serving as United Nations ambassador. Lodge, quiet on political subjects, hints at a peace plan while criticizing Russia's disarmament proposal as specious. Kennedy and Johnson press Republicans as Nixon faces the campaign ahead.
South Korea ends political violence as caretaker leaders and the Democratic party agree to convene the National Assembly on August 8. The Democrats won 174 of 233 lower-house seats and 29 of 58 upper-house seats with nine races undecided.
In Havana the Cuban government offered no clear successor to Fidel Castro as he rests from illness. Raul Castro, seen as likely to assume control, is reportedly taking complete rest after doctors ordered rest for the prime minister. Rumors of cancer and a rectal operation circulate in Havana, though denied by sources close to the government.
A total of 202 Yugoslavs fled their Communist homeland and requested asylum in Austria last month, police said today in Vienna.
Moscow claims it captured V. M. Slavnov an American spy trained to obtain defense secrets in the Soviet Union. He was said to be captured in June while crossing into Iran and planned to infiltrate Leningrad with forged documents and passports for future spies. The announcement noted no immediate U S response. The embassy said visas were issued for Powers family and associates to attend a trial in Moscow while several defense lawyers await approval.
A U.S. spokesman derides the Soviet proposal for a full UN summit on disarmament as specious and frivolous. Diplomatic circles at the UN hoped Eisenhower and Khrushchev might meet, while Morozov urged top leader participation for a proper level discussion.

They booked flights to Mexico City on June 25 and showed hotel registrations before leaving. Both worked as junior mathematicians at Fort Meade's Communications Intelligence Agency.
Ohio’s excise tax increases on cigarettes malt beverages wine and horse race betting raised state revenue for 1959 60 by about 44 percent to 100 301 858 dollars from 69 702 851 dollars. Cigarettes produced 62 614 723 dollars malt beverages 26 million and horse wagering 9 651 308 dollars. June receipts were 9 712 230 dollars still up about 15 percent from June 1959.
A Columbus Common Pleas judge dissolved a restraining order blocking a fare increase, allowing Columbus Transit Co. to raise bus fares by five cents to 25 cents or four tickets for 90 cents. The current rate is 20 cents or four tickets for 70 cents, with officials planning an appeal.

City Council unanimously approved three measures in the water improvement program at a recessed meeting. The actions include authorizing detailed plans for Logan's 520000 water upgrade, appointing bond attorneys to prepare 520000 water revenue bonds, and issuing notes to proceed with the Vine Street water line extension. Council earlier failed to pass these at the prior meeting due to a No vote and an absence. After tonight's session, Bright changed his vote to support the package.
Retired businessman E. W. Goode from Urbana Ohio returned to the Crater of Diamonds in Murfreesboro Arkansas after finding a 4.64 carat diamond Monday morning and a 5.12 carat stone a few hours later. The smaller stone is valued at about $1000, while the larger’s value could not yet be estimated. Under crater rules Goode may keep the smaller gem but owes a 25 percent royalty on the second since it exceeds five carats. Tourists may pay a fee to hunt for diamonds.
Police seek Clarence Leon Raby 26 near Knoxville in the robbery slaying of Anderson County merchant and the killing of Union County deputy sheriff Dan Cooper 27 was killed and his father Kaley Cooper 52 wounded in an exchange with Knox County officers ambush described. Kaley Cooper charged with felonious assault. Raby linked to the DeVault shooting earlier on a rural road.
In the Southeastern Ohio Little League Tournament at Wellston, McArthur defeated Logan 8 to 1. Pitcher Harkins held Logan to two hits with 10 strikeouts and five assists, while Mowery allowed four hits and struck out 12. McArthur capitalized on walks errors and wild pitches.
New York AP reports vandalism costs city schools about 500000 dollars annually. Officials say the money could fund a new school building every four years.
