President Roosevelt returned to Washington from a weekend cruise to dedicate a Montfaucon monument honoring the American army’s Meuse-Argonne offensive victory. He stressed the long friendship between the United States and France and the shared ideal of freedom under democracy.
Lloyd Snyder aged 42 of Creola was struck and killed by an automobile in McArthur Sunday at midnight. Police reported the fatal traffic incident and identified the victim.
The House will likely postpone debate on the Senate approved wage and hour bill until next week. A broader House draft faces possible controversy over a proposed Labor Standards board powers and minimums. The Senate amended bill passed 56 to 28 with a Wheeler Johnson child labor swap.
Nine passengers and crew members died when an Italian commercial aircraft crashed near the Wadi Halfa air drome in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. The plane was en route southbound when the accident occurred and all aboard were killed.
In Bellefontaine Ohio a car crashed through a heavy wire fence and plunged into Indian Lake on State Route 32. Only one survived. five others from Lima and Hartford were trapped in the water for hours before rescue. Victims include Keith Bud Greenwood a bus line division manager, Robert L Bartholomew a refining chemist, Frances Bartholomew, Donald Friedley a drama instructor, and Elizabeth Dugan a Yale research worker and Friedley’s fiancée. Miss Clementine Colucci, a Lima teacher, was in hysterics and unable to explain the crash.
Tom Logan a Daily News press room employee suffered a severe cut to the little finger of his right hand today when his hand was caught in a small circular saw. Medical staff attended the scene and he was transported for treatment.
In Columbus investigators swarm state affairs as liquor and highway departments and the civil service commission face probes by State Auditor Ferguson. Atty Gen. DiSalle and Gov. Davey aides review other departments for irregularities amid calls to indict six Republicans in Lawrence County for ballot tampering and forced entry.
Scott Geslin of Logan was fined 600 dollars and costs after pleading guilty to two liquor violations. His wife Dora Geslin admitted interfering with an officer and paid 100 dollars. Both were jailed for failure to pay.
The Securities and Exchange Commission expelled Michael J. Meehan from three exchanges for manipulating Bellanca Aircraft common stock in 1935. Known as the "boy wizard of Wall Street," Meehan matched orders and used devices to raise prices to spur public buying.
Delegates at the Disabled American Veterans state convention in Columbus denounced national Adjutant Vivian D. Corbly and other officers. State Adjutant Albert L. Daniels urged condemnation of fundraising actions by national officers, a resolution adopted unanimously. Springfield was chosen as the 1938 convention site, and George R. Fout of Cleveland named Ohio commander, with his wife elected head of the new Ohio auxiliary.
A two day tribute in Oxford Ohio honored William Helms McGuffey author of the readers bearing his name. The celebration ended yesterday and was sponsored by the Federated McGuffey Societies of America marking the centenary of his Volumes Three and Four.
Joseph Carlos Brashares of Enterprise is among 270 who passed the state bar examination given in Columbus on July 1. Brashares will be sworn in Friday in Columbus by Chief Justice Carl V. Weygandt.

Bartholomew and Frances Bartholomew of Lima, Keith Greenwood of Lima, Donald Friedley of Orono Maine, and Elizabeth Dugan of Hartford Conn. Only survivor was Clementine Colucci, 30, Lima school teacher.
Insurgents pushed a new spearhead toward Madrid breaking through near Villanueva de la Canada with only light resistance. Fierce battles raged on the Eastern and Southern fronts as Franco forces pressed the government defenses and sought to isolate Madrid from Valencia. Government sources said Italian troops were withdrawn from Santander to reinforce Teruel amid heavy combat around Bezas and Ovejo.
Charles Bird, one of three escaped Missouri convicts, was identified by a truck driver as the blond gunman who robbed 26 Cleveland truck drivers last fall and winter. From a police line-up, Bird was singled out, and the robberies were noted for returning drivers’ personal funds while taking company money. The gunman promised one victim he would not bother him again.
