Clark C. Carpenter 54 Lancaster grocer drowned in the Hocking river near Route 31. His body was recovered by Ben Sims after nearly 200 searchers scoured the area. Rescue crews faced peril as a small craft swamped. Roop and Hansley narrowly escaped. Coroner Bri an called to identify the body and plans for immediate rites were announced.

The partially decomposed body of Clark C. Carpenter a 54 year old Lancaster grocer was recovered along the Hocking river bank a half mile north of Rockbridge at 7 45 last evening. He had been missing since Sunday evening and was found in only his underclothing. Sheriff Joe Far bearn offered a $5 reward which was awarded to Ben Simms of Sugar Grove for making the grisly discovery.
