The destroyer-minesweeper Hobson collided with aircraft carrier Wasp 1200 miles east of Boston and 700 miles west of the Azores. Sixty-one Hobson sailors were rescued while 176 listed as missing. Wasp sustained a 75 foot gash. both ships part of a Mediterranean bound task force.
