Secretary of State Acheson urged Congress to approve both the 12 nation North Atlantic treaty and a 1.45 billion arms aid program to bolster world wide security. He outlined 1.13 billion for Atlantic Pact states and 320 million for Greece Turkey and others, linking deter rence to Soviet policy.
A wall collapsed during sewer tunnel construction 48 feet underground at 74th Street and Woodlawn Avenue in Chicago. Twenty workers escaped without serious injury after the collapse beneath the Illinois Central Railroad tracks.
Wheat May contracts rise while corn falls deferred. Oats close higher with fair demand. Hogs steady to 25 cents higher topping 18.50. Cattle steady to 25 cents higher up to 27.60. Stocks higher as steel shares lift. Bonds steady as rail recovery extends.
A 32-year-old factory worker Mrs Marion Remington was found slain in an abandoned quarry nine miles southeast of Toledo. Her body lay in 30 feet of water, bruised, bound with tire chains, a mattress cover, and garden fence, after disappearing around April 3. Her husband Clayton Remington, 39, is being hunted for questioning. detective Captain Ralph Murphy said no charges filed yet.
A Senate committee in Columbus Ohio reported favorably on a bill to create a Fair Employment Practices Commission. The measure, already passed by the House, was approved 5 to 0 by the commerce and labor panel, with all five votes from Democrats as Republicans were absent. The bill advances to the Senate rules committee for scheduling.
Columbia Ohio April 27 Joseph Unger chief engineer of the state highway department resigns to enter private employment. He will manage the Dayton office of Carroll and Edwards Equipment Company of Cincinnati, according to Highway Director T J Kauer.
A blaze swept through 1000 acres of timber in Shawnee State Forest Scioto County Ohio yesterday. Division forester Floyd Myers says the fire was apparently set deliberately in at least seven spots.
Dayton April reports the Air Force will study hundreds of saucer sightings from domestic and foreign sources. Officials say 30 percent stem from weather balloons or cosmic ray tests, 30 percent from ordinary causes, while 40 percent remain unexplained. An Ohio University Hynek study is noted to assess astronomical explanations. Wright Field confirms the Journal-Herald story.
The United States ends export controls on more than 500 items allowing shipments to Soviet bloc nations or any destination without licenses. Secretary of Commerce Sawyer announces removal of a year old ban for strategic reasons. Items include clocks, watches, railroad ties, lumber, building materials, plumbing fixtures, refrigerators, and washing machines.
Mrs. Ida Galloway, 90, died in a fire that destroyed her residence last night in the city. Firefighters battled the blaze, and investigators began determining the cause.
POMEROY, O. April 27 An attempt to place former mayor Delmar A. Canaday under a peace bond was abandoned last night. Jack Cowie a reporter for the Pomeroy Sentinel withdrew his affidavit asking the bond in a request to justice of the peace L B Higgins. He gave no reasons for his action. Cowie's action followed a second postponement of a hearing on the peace bond request in the ongoing personal feud with Canaday.
The Ohio Supreme Court refused to review the case of Ernest L. Molnar a former Cleveland police lieutenant who was sentenced to six to sixty years in prison for bribery.
Harley Ellinger a 37 year old science instructor at Logan High School is named one of four outstanding science teachers in Ohio by the Ohio Academy of Science. He is a Fellow of the Academy and secretary of the Ohio University district. Ellinger a Logan graduate with a Capital University and Ohio State education, has taught chemistry for 12 years.
Frank Henry Millhouse of Cleveland was spared the electric chair as Gov. Lausche granted a stay until May 25. The stay allows time to review Millhouse's first degree murder conviction for the December 20 1947 holdup killing of Yordan Ranchoff at a Cleveland auto washing firm.
The Senate finance committee approved the House passed oleomargarine tax repeal bill by voice vote. Chairman George announced the measure advanced and noted uncertainty about when the Senate might vote due to other legislation.
Chiang Kai-shek, back in Shanghai after retirement, warned of a third world war if China falls to communists and pledged to share burdens as he directs the Kuomintang. In the same day, Reds seized Putung across the Whangpoo and Nationalist troops pulled back from Soochow, with 10,000 Reds engaged and 5,000 killed, signaling potential moves toward Shanghai or Hangchow.

Paul Makushak, 33, emerged after ten years sealed in a three by five foot cubicle built in a Brooklyn brownstone. Police described the makeshift tomb as his only world since 1939 when his mother sealed him in. He spoke of preferring isolation and showed no clear view of the outside world.
Ohio truckers staged a two day protest, parking their vehicles along highways to oppose state weight limit laws they deem discriminatory. The action followed a vote by the United Truckers union here last night.

Trucks halted nationwide from Akron to Conneaut, pausing at truck stops while state patrols moved drivers along. Protests spread to Austintown in Mahoning County and weight-checks operated by the patrol near Girard and Edinburg Portage County.
Clarence Matheny announces the Haydenville plant of National Fireproofing Co will reopen Monday May 2 on a four day week. The plant has been closed since January 1 due to a lack of orders and about 300 workers will return.

Former probate and juvenile judge E. L. Ewing received back pay totaling 1343.73 dollars, as announced by Hocking County Auditor Harry Smith. The sum covers October 1 1947 to February 8 1949, based on an Attorney General ruling that state funds paid into the county treasury for juvenile court work belong to the judge if total salary stays under the common pleas judge level.
