The long range housing bill won Senate approval authorizing 810,000 public housing units over six years and a $275 million farm housing program. The measure also funds a home construction cost research program as it heads to the House. The bill passed 57 to 13 with 33 Democrats and 24 Republicans for. 2 Democrats and 11 Republicans against.
The British sloop Amethyst was hit again while moving toward Nanking on the Yangtze. Four British warships have suffered 44 deaths and at least 82 wounds from communist artillery since Wednesday, with 19 casualties on the Amethyst including its captain Lt Cmdr B M Skinner.
Weirton police allege Orville Kittle 26 of Mapleton Pa abducted offcers Al Roose and James Herman after questioning two suspects in the Folllawsbee Bank robbery. WV and PA plan formal kidnapping charges as other suspects tied to three bank robberies are detained.
Captain Peter Cazalet of HMS London says shells and shrapnel tore 23 holes in the hull during the Yangtze battle. He will likely eat standing for days as he recovers from painful but not serious wounds. A nearby Chinese river pilot was killed.

Washington April 22 The first year cost for re arming NATO nations is 1 13 billion dollars. Secretary Acheson told the Senate foreign relations committee the total includes about 1 13 billion for the pact nations plus 320 million for Greece and Turkey. The plan seeks to begin July 1 and notes some costs will come from the President's budget leaving about 1 05 billion outside it. Senator Connally said the program is defensive and in the interest of peace. Acheson will outline more details on April 28.
Lancaster Ohio will host a new $2,000,000 Diamond Power Specialty Co plant near State Route 22 two miles east of the city. The facility planned for four acres will employ about 500 people and manufacture television sets for industry and boiler accessories. Construction will begin soon with costs estimated between $1.5 and $2 million. The site will house a plant and office building.
The Ohio Supreme Court heard arguments on the appeal of Roy C. Blackburn a former Ohio State University student convicted of the $31 000 payroll robbery of the B F Goodrich Co in Akron on June 24 1947.
A Texas National Guard fighter plane crashed about eight miles northwest of Charleston at 10 A M. today. The pilot was apparently killed in the incident.

About 220 trucks parked along the Pennsylvania Turnpike protest legislative inaction on higher load weights. Authorities reported 40 stopped near New Stanton and 30 to 40 at Irwin Donegal and East McKeesport, with another 100 between Irwin and Donegal.

Ohioans will continue to get auto license tags with special combinations of numerals and letters upon request, including initials. Frank M. Quinn said the state shelved plans to cut the program after about 400 letters requested initial plates. He noted the extra cost and affirmed service to the public.
