Washington reports a record first quarter GNP of 827.3 billion dollars with four percent inflation and a 162.1 percent industrial output index. Officials warn the expansion cannot last without tax increases and Congress weighs a 10 percent surcharge.
John Chapman twenty one of Logan Rt. 1 was fined 130 dollars and costs and given a suspended sixty day jail term on five charges. He received 50 dollars and costs and 30 days for disobeying a police officer 15 dollars and costs for red light and unnecessary noise 25 dollars and costs and fifteen days for reckless operation and speeding. The jail terms were suspended. The arrest followed a chase ending at Rt. 93N and Maysville Road with a road block after police received driving complaints.
Four people die in what appears to be a mass murder on U S Route 277 between Del Rio and Sonora Texas. Two injured children and a suspected missing seventh person were reported as bodies of two women a man and a child were found scattered along the highway and in a pasture.
Pat Cavote of Athens, a former Nelsonville resident and owner of the College Inn at Athens, buys the Fred's Steak House site in Nelsonville to reopen as Patrick's Steak House with his wife Judy assisting. The cocktail lounge opens today and a Thursday April 25 opening is planned for the restaurant. Cavote will later add the Colonel Sanders fried chicken facility after a 45 day Tennessee training for staff.
The Coast Guard approves replacing the Ohio River Bridge that collapsed on December 15 killing 46. A 1800 foot four lane span will link Point Pleasant West Virginia and Gallipolis Ohio two miles downstream. Estimated cost ten million with two million from Appalachian Commission. construction could finish by September 1969. The investigation into the collapse continues with a May 7 hearing in Charleston West Virginia.
Memphis sanitation workers return to work after a memorandum of understanding ends a 65 day walkout that drew Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to the city. The pact grants wage increases and union recognition while signaling ongoing struggles for equality and justice.
The Ohio Bureau of Employment Services reported a weekly decline in unemployment claims for the week ended April 13. New claimants dropped to 3,818 from 5,145, while those unemployed one week or more fell from 41,006 to 34,910.

Izvestia charged four U.S. military attaches with overstepping bounds in seeking information and spying at a shipyard and a military base. Lt. Col. Hugo Matson and Lt. Col. Gerhard Jacobson allegedly entered a closed area near Borisov to take notes. Cmdr. Robert Hamer and Lt. Cmdr. Ralph Channel were accused of photographing a Leningrad shipyard.
Gov. James A. Rhodes said over 800 people are expected to attend the third annual Governor's Conference on Technical Education next Monday. The event will be held at Cincinnati's new Convention Exhibition Center.

A Polish television commentator on Tuesday said a couple employed in Poland's atomic energy program defected to the West. The pair were Zbigniew and Paulina Kopciuch, protégés of Wilhelm Billig, former head of the Institute of Nuclear Research, who was dismissed April 4. President Johnson welcomed South Korean President Chung Hee Park to Honolulu for a one day conference on Vietnam the Korean powderkeg and broader security issues. Park arrived in a drizzle was met by Johnson at the Hawaiian White House estate of Henry J Kaiser where formal meetings were planned.

Five inmates were killed and 80 injured when guards opened fire during a riot at North Carolina Central Prison in Raleigh. The disturbance began after inmates set a yard fire and threw torches at guards. 45 state troopers and 50 Raleigh officers assisted. Commissioner W. Lee Bounds said he refused inmate demands and would not negotiate.
Tornadoes rain hail and strong winds swept the central U S in a pattern Tuesday night into today. It reported 14 tornadoes with gusts up to 75 mph near Topeka and 71 mph in St. Joseph. Several areas saw heavy rain snow and injuries in Guthrie Oklahoma.
An appraisal record for the Athens flood protection project was filed with the Hocking Conservancy Court in Athens by Don R. Johnson secretary of the Hocking Conservancy District. It lists benefits and local shares, with assessments not to exceed 25 percent of appraised benefits, plus properties to be taken or damaged with values for purchase or easement.
