Hocking County commissioners began steps to apply for federal funds to remodel the county jail. Architect firm reports safety, plumbing and access concerns while noting competition for grants and CO G involvement for funding.
Ohio State Tax Commissioner Kosydar told lawmakers the Gilligan plan needs 40 million more for 1971 73 to cover administration of the statewide income tax He said rollbacks apply only in year one and counties may seek more millage later plus university presidents criticize the education budget saying it underfunds higher education and could raise student costs under the plan
Dry and windy conditions trigger a rash of fires as Hocking Honor Camp crews log 12 calls since March 26 including weekends. Rockbridge and Logan departments report four and six grass or trash fires since March 31. A 15 acre grass fire near South Bloomingville, caused by burning trash, was contained after hours of effort on the former Dennis farm recently purchased by Bill Miller of Logan.
A vacant two story brick house once tied to the Greendale Brick Co on Gore-Greendale Road burned early today. Logan firefighters, joined by Nelsonville and sheriff units, battled embers from 3:43 a.m. to 11 a.m. with one side gutted and only brick walls remaining.
All Logan city Starr Washington and Nelsonville York schools will close Friday through Monday for Easter vacation. Laurelville schools plan a six day break with classes resuming Wednesday. Many government offices will close at noon Friday in observance of Good Friday including City Hall and Courthouse offices.

Rennie Davis told about 1,500 students in Hitchcock Hall that Ohio State University would strike or close by May 5 as part of a nationwide antiwar action. He said the plan would culminate with thousands surrounding the Capitol in Washington to demand a Vietnam peace treaty.

In Lancaster Ohio two children Dallas James Yoke aged 12 and Vermeal Ruth Yoke aged 6 drowned in a pond at their east side home. Officials believe the girl fell in and the brother attempted a rescue as their father Otha Yoke jumped in but could not reach them.
Good Friday services run from 12 noon to 2 pm at Logan Presbyterian Church. The Hocking County Ministerial Association sponsors seven area churches with meditations on the seven last words of Jesus and special music from local choirs. The program is broadcast on WLGN and offerings benefit the Ministerial Association.
