Oil Barge and Freighter Collide Near New Orleans
A head on collision between the freighter Union Faith and an oil barge near the Greater New Orleans bridge set flames along the Mississippi River. Twenty five of 51 crewmen remain missing or were hospitalized as the 7301 ton Union Faith sank after the blaze. The oil barge broke in two, one half sank, and a tug pushed downstream as fire crews tried to halt the spread. Local witnesses described a river first “on fire” with fires on wharves and ships as crews scrambled for safety.

Fatal highway shooting spree leaves four dead
Donald Martin Lambright 31 staged a calm paced rampage on the Pennsylvania Turnpike killing four and wounding 17. He was killed himself after shooting his wife and turning the gun on himself. Rosa C. Weltner 81 of 344 W Main St died at 1 25 a m Sunday in Hocking Valley Community Hospital after about a week as a patient. Born Haydenville March 29 1888 she was married 62 years to W D Weltner former Logan mayor. She was a lifelong St Matthew Lutheran Church member and active in Eastern Star Venus Circle and Beauceant. Survived by husband two daughters Novella Gano and Jean Sparnow and a granddaughter. Funeral 2 p m Wednesday at St Matthew Lutheran Church burial Oak Grove Cemetery. Body of Roger D Howdyshell Found in Ohio River
The body of Roger D Howdyshell 29 formerly of Logan was found Saturday in the Ohio River at Marietta after a search that began when he was reported drowned March 6. He lived in Marietta for seven months and worked as a cook at the Tally Ho Restaurant. He was born January 2 1940 in Hocking County and was a member of the United Methodist Church. Survived by parents three brothers and four sisters and several nieces and nephews. Burial in Fairview Cemetery near Rockbridge with services at Heinlein Funeral Home Tuesday morning.

Houston doctors at St Luke s Episcopal Hospital began replacing the mechanical heart implanted in 47 year old Haskell Earp with a human donor heart. Barbara Ewan, a 40 year old widow from Lawrence Massachusetts, was identified as the donor. The operation started at 7 am CST and faces an uncertain duration. Earp had previously received an artificial heart to bridge to a donor. the team hoped the transplant would be brief but life saving.
