A massive tornado ripped through Gainesville and surrounding states causing 198 deaths and about 2000 injuries. Mississippi Governor assumes control in Tupelo where 187 were killed as flood warnings spread. Authorities estimate property losses in the millions and fear many more casualties.
At least ten killed with as many as thirty more feared after a dawn bomb shattered a Veracruz to Mexico City night train crossing a bridge near Paso Del Macho. Rescue teams recovered a conductor and a fireman among scattered wreckage as passengers burned in the plunging wreck.
Columbus April 7 AP Conservation Commissioner Lawrence Woodell described a proposed department uniting all state natural resources work as necessary to preserve Ohio's resources An opposing conservation official noted strong opposition in the legislature Sen Harold D Nichols introduced the plan citing a U S interior official as the author The Senate welfare committee took it under consideration

The Ohio River reached flood stage at Pittsburgh and 12 feet above flood level at Cairo with heavy rains still raising expectations below Evansville. Meteorologist W. C. Devereaux cautioned little damage from Pittsburgh to Louisville, while Paducah faced 50 feet and widespread inundation as hundreds fled homes. The crest near Cairo could approach the 1927 high of 56.4 feet by Friday.
Cincinnati dispatch reports the Ohio River remained above flood stage across its 981 mile stretch with continued high levels noted along the entire basin. Residents brace for potential overflow as authorities monitor rainfall and reservoir releases.
In Baltimore, April 7, Townsend plan directors moved to shape policies and demanded the resignation or removal of George H. Highley, head of Club-93 in Los Angeles with 22,000 members. Dr. F. E. Townsend refrained from voting on resolutions accusing Highley of disloyal conduct with Robert W. Clements, former secretary and co founder.
Brooklyn dispatch reports police questioning an unidentified person tied to the Lindbergh baby kidnapping after a disbarred New Jersey lawyer recanted his confession. District Attorney Geoghan says 18 detectives are seeking a principal suspect in the Wendel kidnapping with possible new leads later today.
Mt. Vernon Ohio April 7 AP Mrs Susie Jobs 49 played pinochle in her jail cell as Prosecutor William L Howell prepared a first degree murder indictment the first against a woman in Knox county history. Howell said the April grand jury would be asked to return the charge charging her with killing ex husband Clarence E Posey 48 at her rural filling station. Sheriff Don Mason said she confessed firing the pistol and quoted her I hope he dies or suffer I found him asleep and fired. She learned of Poseys death only after jail.

Edmund Shaw, a former Logan resident and brother of John D. Shaw, died in Paulding yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. John D. Shaw will attend funeral services there Thursday with sister Mrs. Willard Shaw among the bereaved.

President Roosevelt plans to end his fishing trip in southern waters today and return to the White House. He will reach port likely in Miami tomorrow near noon and head to Warm Springs Georgia for Thursday, with Washington arrival slated for Friday at noon.
