Cattle receipts on hand Tuesday were fairly active with limited supplies. Trading developed slowly with steady to strong prices across classes. stocker and yearling demand was tight due to scarcity. Small lots of slaughter steers and yearlings traded in a tightened $10.00 to $12.25 spread with few values above $11.50.
A Brooklyn bar worker named Smitty, born near Cherry Hill, rarely left New York City. He visits his German in law’s New Jersey, tours the state but returns to Park Row life. He jokes about Jersey towns with different names and declares his loyalty to city life.
Livestock sales featured common lightweights around 9.50 with most beef cows at 8.50 to 11.00 and some good cows at 11.50. Cutters and canners ranged 7.00 to 6.75 with bulls 9.00 to 39.50, and calves 13.00 to 13.50 for good stockers while common stockers sold 9.50 to 12.75. Sheep and goats totaled about 3,000 head with steady to strong lambs at 12.00 to 12.60 and Cull Kinds around 6.00.
Mixed cattle and sheep sales show No. 1 pelts and medium deck stock in the upper teens to mid eight dollars. Wethers reach 86.50 for top lot while additional lots sell around 5.40 for medium deck stock and lower figures for cutters and commons.
The report notes ewe prices from five seventy to thirty six pounds with a maximum cited and average figures discussed. Cull ewes drop to four fifty as poor weather limits price testing and buyers.
