The community enjoyed the moonlit week with numerous local notices. A baby girl was born to Mr and Mrs Charles Scheneberger on East Front Street. Various local agents reported birthdays, church events, land sales, and farm notes.
Local coal dealers await new mine rates as a 10 percent miner increase looms. Suppliers have not received fresh schedules since the strike, with demand soft and stocks high in Lititz. A Reading Coal and Tron Company circular on mine costs is anticipated, guiding consumer prices. Meanwhile G G Diehm returned with a ten pound rock fish and nine bass, after a season catching about ninety bass to date.
Francis Bowes Sayres, son-in-law of former President Wilson and newly named consul to Siam, plans to sail from Montreal on Oct. 5 carrying several car tons of pretzels from N. D. Sturgis bakery to ease sea sickness. Miss Alice Nevins of Lancaster sent the order noting his fondness for the snack. Also reports Pittsburgh families, truck shipments, and a missionary talk by Rev. Dr. L. S. G. Miller about Japan at St Paul’s Lutheran.
The Rotheville Fire Company carnival moved from Saturday to Tuesday due to rain and drew a large crowd. Stands sold out, fireworks were good but damp conditions affected some pieces. Lititz supplied the music and many Lititz residents attended. Mrs Eliza Van Vieck injured after a fall at her East Main Street home, injuring a small bone in her right shoulder.
The Lititz Record Educational Missing Word Contest ran 18 weeks from June 21 to September 18. Winners received cash prizes ranging from 1.00 to 25.00 with a highlight prize of 100.00 awarded to multiple entrants. the final notice names many Lititz residents and their addresses and notes the winning word cleanliness for September 18.
Abram Bomberger cut tobacco and found heavy stalks. Five stalks weighed 40, 42, and 43 pounds, with a final stalk at 4514 pounds. He notes the heaviest tobacco was the last planted and is eager for others to beat this record. He is satisfied with his crop this year and invites comparison.
A scatteredLocal reminiscence describes a boy fetching soup at a firehouse and an observer’s amused take on a printer’s devil origin. It recalls Aldus Manutius and a Black Art nickname, plus two Lancaster men canoeing toward the Pacific, with notes on Helena Arkansas fish wharf, fried catfish, and river navigation shortening paddling distance by eleven miles.
The Denver Press notes the Lititz Record is among the county’s last weekly papers, starting its forty-seventh volume with this week’s issue. It is neatly printed and ably edited by R. E. Buch, earning strong patronage.
G. G. Diehm of Lititz awoke amid shouts to find a copperhead coiled under his chair at Peach Bottom Hotel. Foreign onlookers killed the 50 inch snake, fangs feared to pierce rubber boots. A second copperhead was later found near the area as snakes seek shelter with winter near. Lititz firemen parade planned for Oct 4 with about 100 in line and 150,000 marchers expected, Lititz in twelfth division led by Schuylkill company Reading. Major Robert Filbert of Womelsdorf among judges and locals with relatives in Lititz set to watch.
An auto truck was seen on Fast Main Street yesterday morning with boxes labeled DuPont and Highly Explosive 300 Pounds Dynamite. The driver reappeared, drove off, and denied any danger while the dynamite headed to a nearby stone quarry.
A Reader's ad says money was found on North Broad Street and can be claimed at 1228 Cedar. The note cites Diogenes, famed Greek philosopher, who wandered with a lantern claiming to seek an honest man, reflecting local virtues.
Last evening the Record was notified that a meeting to discuss a Lititz community show will be held in the council chamber on Monday at 8 o clock. Businessmen, farmers, women and any one interested in the movement are urged to attend.
Miss Laura G Hershey married John W Barwick of Philadelphia in a quiet noon ceremony at Rev W G Hersheys home Lititz with only immediate families present. They left for New York City then sailed to Jerusalem where Barwick will join the American Y M C A teaching staff and work in local schools.
The Bomberger distillery and adjoining warehouses in Lebanon County will be dismantled and the property sold after a court announcement. The widow of H. TH Bomberger asked Judge Henry to appoint a guardian for her missing son Paul who disappeared four years ago and has not been heard from since to join in the sale.
The Lititz fire company festival Saturday netted $203.40 including band funds with expected profit between $500 and $600 once all business closes. Townspeople donated generously, gifting about a hundred chickens and other items from rural areas. Despite early rain, almost everything sold and corn soup lasted until 8 50.
Harry Reidenbach of Spruce Street Lititz reported his automobile parked outside the Armstrong Linoleum plant was stolen at 8 30 am and discovered at noon. A machinist dressed man started the car and drove away. Police broadcast the description and a discharged worker seen nearby is being questioned as a possible suspect.
