Pick Up Unit Across the Grid Circuits Described
The phonograph pickup converts mechanical energy into electricity by varying magnetic reluctance in the circuit. Flux variation induces an electromotive force in the coil, which, if connected to the grid or transformer, yields a signal. Placing the pickup across the grid is deemed more effective than through the transformer primary.
Screen Grid Tubes Give Mach More Amplification
Screen grid tubes provide much higher amplification by using standard tubes with adjusted circuits for high plate load impedances. They are touted as the greatest advance in radio tubes in five years. Using screen grid tubes can reduce antenna size, potentially to five feet of dangling wire, while maintaining volume comparable to a long outdoor antenna. The question remains whether the extra cost justifies the ability to shorten the aerial.
Power Tubes Heat Up. Handle Radio Tubes With Care
Radio News notes power tubes 170 and 210 types run hot after minutes of use. Power amplifiers and B rectifier tubes generate more heat, so switch off after five minutes to cool and avoid small burns. Heat is normal and not a concern for longer operation.
Liquid air bottle for fans aids radio selectivity
Scientists note metal at very low temperatures acts as near perfect conductor. English experimenter Alan J Bremner reports that immersing a radio set antenna coil in liquid air boosts selectivity though signal strength remains unchanged. Radio News notes fans will want a thermos of liquid air in workshops.
