Saved the Fleet A Wisconsin lumberman saves the Red River fleet
In 1864 Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Bailey led a daring dam construction to raise water levels and ferry Admiral Porter's gunboats past rapids on the Red River. The improvisation, built by 3000 men from Wisconsin regiments, enabled three to four gunboats to reach deep water, earning Bailey a congressional thanks and a brevet brigadier general promotion for Merk.
