Barton Swarr, a run poker aboard the American steamer Saetia, reported safe after the Saetia sank off Ocean City Maryland Saturday morning following an explosion. All 81 aboard landed safely. 16 crew from liferafts were later landed at Cape May New Jersey. Relatives awaiting word.

Avon Kofroth recalls near miss with submarine attack
Avon Kofroth of U S Navy describes a September 20 evening when a submarine surfaced between his boat and destroyers. A torpedo struck, depth charges exploded, and oil from the sunken sub rose to the surface. Washington later credited the destroyers with destroying the enemy submarine.

Peace came too late for George Irvin as government notice reached his Lititz wife that he was killed on September 23 while serving with Company K 318 Infantry. Born near Rothsville and longtime Brunnerville resident, he worked at the dry goods shop factory in Lititz and married Lida Kofreth last January. Surviving relatives include parents George and ? Irwin of Brunnerville, a brother Harry of Lancaster, and sisters Clara and Hiram Brubaker of Millway. The record notes possible confusion about the exact date of death. In other news, Galen Balmer reports Irvin, Witmer, and Downey were wounded. a large St Bernard named Jim resides in Linden Hall. Real estate transactions include sale of Adelaide L.
