The town recounts a brisk first day of hunting with many rabbits and pheasants shot across farms near Brunnerville and Lititz. Notable events include a mule injury, local real estate rumors, medical lectures, and Armistice Day bank closures. Reports note temperate weather, Indian summer conditions, and a high level of sportsmanship among hunters.
Edward Heidrick shipped twenty five carloads of potatoes from here last week at 1.05 per bushel. Total shipments likely 125 carloads. The lowest price paid was 95 cents. Early this week a market slump left carloads waiting for buyers in big cities.
Middletown High School meets Lititz High School this Saturday in Middletown. The locals expect the Lititz eleven to provide a tough test as the strongest opponent faced this season. Lititz is going strong and the contest is anticipated to be hard fought.
Theodore B. Bush of Lititz now living in Honolulu writes that his winter garden grows like summer crops. He records picking two pears weighing one and a quarter pounds and notes eggs selling at $1.05 per dozen, with hens supplying his family.
United Zion Home north of town received three slaughtered deer from the State Game Department for the inmates. The deer were killed by hunters hired by the department to curb crop and orchard damage in certain counties. The gift was appreciated, as many elderly residents had never tasted venison before.
A late night flat lowe en trick rung the chime bells of Mary Dixon Memorial Chapel for five minutes after 12 30 am awakening many. The principal investigated and found cords tied to bell ropes stretched across the street to a yard. He named three East End boys as participants and hinted at inside help while Rev Stengel confronted the scene.
Miss Dora Fetter entertained about thirty guests at her parents’ Front Street home last Wednesday evening with refreshments served to attendees.
Austin Weiss of Reading now living in Lititz, a star on the former Legion team and two years on the Downingtown champions, has received an invitation to report to the Washington Palace Club in D C for a tryout. Weiss stands about six feet tall, weighs 190 pounds, and is noted for speed and a good shooting touch. He previously faced Washington in exhibition games with Lititz and Downingtown.
Curtis Hensel, a druggist in Winter Garden, created a winter garden in his shop space of 22 by 22 inches. He planted over twenty varieties of evergreen plants and mosses, including thirteen varieties of mosses and two varieties with red berries. The display stays green all winter and aims to be attractive later in the year, using low varieties not exceeding four inches in height.
Lititz Fire Company’s Saturday supper sold 2000 oysters 25 pounds beans 26 Moravian cakes 15 gallons ice cream and other items to nine fifteen. The gross receipts approached two hundred dollars and one hundred dollars is expected as clear profit. The Ladies Auxiliary praised for help. Smokers night moved to January 23 1928.
A Lancaster woman won a highly ornamented three layer wedding cake topped with a toy bride and groom. She guessed its weight to the ounce at 30 pounds 14 ounces. The cake, made of plaster of Paris and camouflaged with icing, is kept as an ornament. Over a thousand entries came in from Philadelphia and beyond, with weights from two to 200 pounds.
Samuel E. Lane, ailing, was operated on last Friday at St Joseph's hospital in Lancaster for internal trouble. Friends hope for his speedy recovery and his return home to Front Street. Lewis Simcox, injured in an auto accident near Landisville about a month ago, is slowly recovering.
Chestnuts, once abundant in Lancaster County, are now scarce as blight devastates trees leaving skeletal trunks. Two girls fled the car, but no damage occurred and no action will be taken. The incident serves as a warning to avoid turning out auto lights. The youths responsible could be traced.
John L. Huber, formerly of this area, vacated his 1000-acre farm near Dendron, Virginia, and moved to his son-in-law and daughter Mr and Mrs William McNeal, Suffolk R D 4, far from his old home. He has given the farm to his children and reports full recovery from an operation last year.
Samuel Kline, a Lititz area farmer, reports high returns from a crop grown with certified seed. He averaged over 400 bushels per acre, with one acre yielding 582 bushels of Irish Cobblers and Russets. Some tubers weighed a pound and eleven ounces, though spacing errors reduced potential yield.
A deadly disease strikes rabbits, eight found dead near Schaefferstown and more carcasses reported on highways. Farmers warn that while meat remains edible, the illness can infect humans through skin contact, prompting caution for hunters and handlers.
A green six inch lizard, captured at Lancaster linoleum plant, arrived in a ship ment of cork from Spain by Linn Kemper of Lititz. Displayed by the Boy Scouts at the Community Show. The lizard drops its tail when pursued and was kept in a warm place and fed raw meat. Lizards number over two thousand species and adapt to all conditions except cold.
The Society of Farm Women No 1 will meet at the home of Mrs. M A Moore on Saturday afternoon at 1 30 o clock Miss Mae Brenner of Kissel Hill will give a talk on Care of the Sick.
Mark Fetter reports an extraordinary turnip harvest from a single field in Brunnerville. Turnips are mostly large with many six to seven and a half pound specimens. five pounders are common. The crop followed a corn planting aided by Armor's fertilizer.
Two boys from near Lititz entered the Fairview school house Sunday evening in Penn township and took two baseballs and new pencils. They were seen by passing students, and their names were given to the teacher Mr Singer. Mr Singer will wait until Saturday to address the matter. if they do not appear the school board will settle it.
The Brunnerville U B church sent a harvest home collection to the United Zion Home on October 30. Items included peppers, beans, corn, walnuts, pears, apples, tomatoes, grapes, popcorn, beets, turnips, pumpkins, greens, cabbage, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, and canned pickles and jellies.

Luther Sharp was badly wounded when a gun discharged accidentally by Lincoln Gable near Campbells Town in Lebanon County on Wednesday morning. He was taken to Lebanon hospital with a shattered calf and a saved leg expected from X rays, while Gable fainted at the scene. Breyton Sharp and other gunners helped load him into a car and summon aid to Good Samaritan Hospital.
