A compact town roundup notes the Chamber of Commerce will meet Tuesday June 5 at the Fire House. Other items include property transactions on Spruce Street and Neffsville housing, garden notes, a Speedwell farms bouquet business, and a George Kann trip to Trenton.
Eby's records show two lots of cattle fed on the Eby farm with profits after paying farmer time and investment costs but excluding fertility value. First lot of ten black steers gained 417 pounds in 217 days from 915 to 1932.2 pounds, cost 10.40 a hundred, selling price 13.25. Second lot of ten red steers gained 403 pounds in 200 days from 9623 to 1866 pounds, cost 10 a hundred, selling price 13.
An election of officers was held by the Rotary Club here last Thursday evening to take office on July 1. The list includes President Rev. E. S. Crosland, vice president Dy M. H. Yoder, second vice president Hon J. Wissler, secretary B. M. Seaman, and treasurer W. Martin Muth.
The widow of Benjamin Erb of North Broad Street has recovered enough from five weeks of high blood pressure to be up and about. Mrs John Brubaker of South Broad Street was admitted to a Lancaster hospital on Wednesday for an operation on an internal ailment.
One hundred white leghorn pullets were stolen from Willis Gibble’s Brunnerville premises last Thursday night. Earlier, Harry Bruckart reported chicken thieves swiped 200 baby chicks from his property between Clay and Penryn.
Frank Ditzler and Jacob Lehn will install machinery on the second floor of J. Alvin Enck's service station to manufacture children's shoes. They report a ready market for their entire output and expect to begin operations before summer's end.
Mr. Jacob L. Grosh of Spruce Street near Fourth Avenue spent a week in Louisville attending the annual musicians convention and serving as secretary, a post he has held for many years.
The Lititz Fire Company will parade this Saturday starting at 2 PM with the High School Band leading. Headquarters are at the New Holland Public Schools and paraders without transport should report to the Fire House. drivers with space are urged to cooperate.
Mr and Mrs Adam B Long plan a sixty four day journey starting June 4 from Lancaster in Shreiner's auto bus with a party of eighteen aboard. The group will tour the Pacific coast and stop at Yellowstone National Park and other places of interest. Travel will occur by day with hotel nights. The bus capacity is twenty one.
A New York Herald Tribune representative visited Lititz to arrange hosting poor New York children this summer. Churches should appoint two-person committees to meet and plan. The first coordination meeting is set for June 4. Last year twenty four children stayed two weeks in Lititz and nearby countryside.
A list of graduates shows future plans including college positions nursing and teaching. Many will attend Millersville State Normal School or enter colleges while some take office work at Lancaster and Reading Hospital. The American Legion medals were awarded to two 8th grade students for courage service leadership and scholarship.
A Monday class day program at the high school drew humor from a class prophecy by Ruth Farrand in a crystal reading, the boys quartet, and a presention ovations. Viola Bisker donated the maroon plush stage curtain accepted by Prof. M. C. Demmy. The Junior stunt spread crimson and silver streamers from a cord above the audience, displaying the date 1929.
The Alumni Association elected officers at a Monday meeting including Frank Longenecker as president and James Mumimert as vice president Miriam Girvyin as recording secretary and Ralph Weir as corresponding secretary A decision was made to buy scenery for the stage for plays The alumni banquet occurs tonight in the High School gymnasium Commencement exercises were held Tuesday evening Rev Warren E Giles of East Orange NJ was scheduled to speak but could not attend Rev Charles T Huett spoke on Slogans of Youth with themes of enthusiasm courage persistence ambition and love Benediction by Rev A Heisey in Rev W R Sammel's absence
The typewriting department granted awards for the last semester including Royal typewriter gold and silver pins and certificates. Recipients Dorothy Longenecker Kathryn Lehn Edith Hornberger Irene Clair Violet Roth Esther Hershey Myrtle Kling Blanche Stauffer Lana Oehme Dorothy Spacht.
A narrative describes new auto drivers learning to handle vehicles, facing near misses, crowds, and tense moments on East Main Street and trolley tracks. It then references a poem by Ed Rauch of Lititz, “We’re Coming Father Abraham,” honoring Lincoln’s 1862 volunteer call, with lines about soldiers marching and gathering lines of farmers. The Lancaster and Lititz road, now state owned, is in better shape than during tolls but remains a makeshift. Sloped in all directions and narrowed by trolley tracks it proves poor for trucks and buses. A real road between Lancaster and Lititz is eagerly awaited with plans for a bus route to widen it.
Two hundred and sixteen students will graduate at the Millersville State Normal School next Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Lititz members of the graduating class include Elizabeth Girvin Bernice Dengler Esther Weber George Fleischman Lester Fleischman. Other Lititz attendees are Ada Rudy Ruth Carper Paul Furlow Alton Gable Earl Reist Sara Weidman Marian Light Vera Hoff man Martha Sturgis. Joe Grosh will graduate from Franklin and Marshall College on Monday morning.
N. D. Sturgis of Green Tree near Philadelphia reports damage to his Willys Knight after a woman driver struck the vehicle on a narrow bridge. Spickler, steering the Sturgis car, watched as the other car's wheels ran over the running board and tore off the mud guard.
The Lititz Boy Scouts won a loving cup Saturday for best appearing Troop in line during the New Holland parade. Twenty boys marched under the American and Troop flags as H. R. Wertsch displayed many WWI era photos of local boys in uniform, noting their growing interest over time.
Mr and Mrs Charles Graul of Indianapolis Indiana and his nephew Daniel Greenly of Coatesville Indiana spent part of a week with Mr Grauls sister Mrs Elwood Furlow and her family in the Hoosier state during their visit.
Mrs. John Weaver and children were taken from near Rothsville to Slate Hill in Cumberland County on Monday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Weaver’s sister Mrs. Harbold. Mr. Weaver, recovering from pneumonia, could not go.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Waddell and Mr and Mrs G G Bitzer depart this week for Chicago to attend the National Confectioners Convention at the Hotel Stevens for five days The Stevens hotel features 3000 rooms and stands twenty five stories high with four basement floors
President Coolidge signed the Greist Bill to appropriate $2500 for a Lititz memorial honoring soldiers of the Revolution who died at a local military hospital. The Borough must provide a plot of ground for the memorial’s erection.
A large audience attended the Lititz Memorial Day program with the High School Band and three war veterans leading the procession from Leola via Lititz. A ball game Lititz versus Rothsville followed, with patriotic addresses by B C Atlee of Lancaster and Rev H A Swartz, and Prof H H Beck reading Lincoln's Gettysburg Address at Moravian cemetery.
Charles and Harry Regennas received a Walsh garden tractor made in Minneapolis this week. Powered by a 3.5 horsepower gasoline engine, it proved quick and efficient, eliminating the need for horse or hand work. Wheel width adjusts to 26 inches, with attachments like a plow and lawn mower. Price under $200.
Prof Beck addressed 150 members of the Ministerial Association of York County and families at Lititz Springs Park. After lunch the group held a business session in the Moravian Sunday School chapel and heard a talk on the Moravian Church and American History. Music by a trombone choir accompanied the afternoon visit to Linden Hall and other sites. A love feast followed.
Miss Helen Marble, daughter of Mr and Mrs Claude Marble, is in Hood College's graduating class of Frederick Maryland. Commencement exercises will be held Tuesday morning. Mr and Mrs Marble will travel Saturday to attend and return Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs John Helman of West Main Street joined Mr and Mrs Hiram Weachter, visiting from Saturday to Monday. Weachter, a trustee, chauffeured them to Lansdale Lexington Doylestown Norristown and the proposed penitentiary site. The Lititz guests enjoyed sights in Montgomery and Bucks Counties.
John Muth returns home from Haverford College taking a preparatory course and will stay several weeks due to an epidemic at the school. He plans to resume studies June 8 for examinations and June 11 for Commencement, then attend a college in New York State next year.
On May 28, 40 years ago Lititz was struck by a massive hail storm that damaged fruit trees and grain fields. Nearly every north facing window pane was broken and slate and tin roofing suffered. Hail stones as big as fists weighed about a pound, prompting Lancaster to supply repair glass.
D D Kilgore and family of Woods Hine spent Sunday in Lititz. Dozens of residents and visitors including Mrs Mary Yoder and Mrs Lizzie Wenger travel between Lititz Shillington Reading New York City Gettysburg and Pottsville as locals visit relatives attend events or take trips. Notable trips include Moravian College Bethlehem visits and Memorial Day gatherings with families from Millerstown Hahnstown Myerstown and Drexel Hill.
