The town schedules outdoor outings on Ascension Day and Memorial Day. Lititz stores close for the holidays. band concerts are undecided. Reunions, parades, and church events fill late June with the Eckenrade and Roses feasts noted. Police stop bad literature and tree trimming is urged.
A R Keller of Lititz expands his bakery with new machinery to improve sanitation and bread quality. The addition measures 74 by 56 feet and features sifting, dough kneading, breaking, rolling, leaf molding, proving, moist steam ovens, cooling racks, and a waxed paper wrap. The shop emphasizes white walls, cleanliness, and rapid production, with a machine now cutting thirty seven buns at a time.
Barton Sharp experienced a high powered rifle explosion while firing at Brubaker's dam on Saturday. The rifle stock shattered and the barrel was damaged but Sharp escaped unharmed. The blast sent the rifle ten feet back and splintered a nearby post. The cause remains unknown. one cartridge in the chamber fired as trigger pulled and others exploded from the magazine. The German made rifle was secondhand and previously used to shoot a deer. Sharp is a son of Adam Sharp near Brickerville. A strawberry festival is planned by the Shran church Young Ladies' Bible Class for June 21 with bake sale items.
Rev. A Heisey delivered a patriotic memorial sermon at the United Evangelical Church to G. A. R. veterans with Sons of Veterans and American Legion members as guests. He urged reverence for Memorial Day, linking it to sacred memory, national liberty, and Christian patriotism.
Robert Stead presents a modern Western tale set on a fading frontier. The heroine known as Zen of the Y. D. emerges from a ranching world ruled by her father a wealthy cattleman. The story blends realism with romance and adventure as it launches in this paper next week.
Lititz post office will be closed part of Friday for Memorial Day. Hours observed include 7 to 9 and 1 to 2 and 6 to 7:30. In town mail delivery occurs only in the morning, with no rural route deliveries.
The piece recalls the four Sturgis brothers Oliver Nathan William and Edwin who fought to preserve the Union with Edwin the last survivor. Nathan was wounded at Chattanooga and later died in Lititz while William vanished after capture at Andersonville. An ex-prisoner Eugene Bachman later claimed William died of starvation in prison. Garden Spot Post No. 56 and the Lititz Band schedule a Memorial Day march Friday May 30 at 7 A M from Legion Headquarters to Leola to decorate Carpenters Church Shurc Monterey and Hellier's Church graves. After lunch in Leola and Mechanicsburg they go to Kissel Hill and Lititz Lutheran cemetery then join G A R and Spanish American veterans at Mora vian cemetery for a 3 PM service led by Chap lain Rev H A Swartz. Automobiles are needed to transport members and the band to the sites.
The Lititz High School Junior Class will host a farewell banquet for the Senior Class in the High School Gym tonight. About eighty five people are expected, including students and faculty. The juniors aim for a real swell affair that the seniors will not forget, with plans largely kept secret.
John Hess, a truck farmer near Lititz, grows an acre of onions and sells them by the truckload in Lititz and Lancaster. He notes ideal cool moist weather supports bulb growth and blight resistance, and says demand is brisk with onions selling as fast as he can prepare them.
York Moravian Church marked its 175th anniversary with participation from Rev. Samuel Albright of Lititz, Rev. F. W. Stengel of Linden Hall, and Rev. Ernst Hagen of New Drop. Rev. E. S. Crosland of Lititz spoke, a lovefeast was held, historical papers were read, and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Fisher plus Miss Grace Keller attended as guests of Mrs. Bella Brink.
The market shows fat cattle down about a dollar per hundred in the last ten days, with traders expecting slow recovery. Sellers before the drop earned 11 to 12 cents a pound on fine steers, and even at 10 cents a pound there may be some break-even. Fall feeders were inexpensive at 6 and 64 cents, widening the margin between purchase and sale versus the past three years. Also advertised are crepe fabrics at 25 cents per yard by My and abecker's.
Susquehanna University athletes won the Class B Colleges title at Harrisburg with 69 points, defeating Drexel. Coach Luther D Grossman, a Lititz native and Susquehanna graduate, produced top scorers and secure event wins, including hurdles, amid praise from the Selingsgrove Tribune for building a strong program since 1915.
Delp near Lititz reports an acre of tobacco planted a week ago is growing well and he plans to plant another acre this week. He notes early tobacco cures best and reduces packing trouble. Plants started under glass and crops grown under muslin show varied progress due to cool nights, while early corn planting is making good headway.
The Lititz High School senior class holds a series of events starting with a baccalaureate sermon Sunday at 7:30 PM in the High School Auditorium led by Rev. E. B. Crosland. Class day follows Tuesday at 2 PM with a full program. Commencement Wednesday at 8:00 PM features speaker Martin G. Brumbaugh, former governor, with tickets available at Scotts Bookstore Monday.
Miss Almenara Gerhart spent Friday night with Miss Laura Rudy of Lititz. Several residents, including Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Eby of Salunga and William and Cecelia Enek, hosted cousins and relatives. Others toured Atlantic City, Newark, Valley Forge, and Philadelphia, while local trips cited Reading, Red Lion, and Niagara Falls. A William Smith estate settlement was noted.
