Favors Buying Historical Site To Preserve War Graves
Professor Herbert H. Beck urged the local American Legion to buy East Main street plot where over a hundred Revolutionary War soldiers are buried. A hospital operated there from December 1777 to August 1778 in the Brethren’s House, with about 200 sick and wounded, many dying from camp fever. Graves were later found during brick yard clay digging, prompting plans for a monument.

Fire destroys tobacco shed on Geyer farm near Ephrata
A tobacco shed at Walter Geyer’s farm one mile north of Ephrata on State Highway was totally destroyed by lightning Tuesday evening. Ephrata Fire Company saved adjoining buildings. The 20 by 40 foot shed, its implements, straw and hay, were lost. Estimated loss about 1500 dollars, largely insured. The owner is a former Lititz resident.

Homer White Ends Wild Steer Threat Near Ephrata
Homer White of near Lititz headed off a runaway steer near Ephrata after reading a Record item. White, using a Springfield rifle, fired a sequence of shots at about seventy five yards, ending the thousand pound animal after a brief pursuit two miles from Reamstown. The steer had earlier escaped a butcher shop window and a week of armed searchers.

Lititz led county towns in flood relief fundraising with a total of $1,637.82 toward the Mississippi flood sufferers. The Brethren Church donated $72.37 and Kissel Hill Lutheran S. S. gave $81, with Lititz solicitors listed under H. J. Pierson as chairman and many volunteers named.

Moravian Church Forest Reaches 3500 Trees Planted
The Nazareth Moravian church forestry board led by A. O. Sturgis and Squire James Fry completed planting 3,500 trees on a 10 acre plot bought from Nazareth Hall Military Academy. Oak and pine cover the western woods, part of the church forest effort that totals about 175,000 trees planted to date. Sturgis and Fry hail from Lititz.

Lititz Visit Marks Return Since 1871 for Local Couple
Mr. and Mrs. Robert McCurdy and son Harold of Philadelphia visited Miss Olga Beckler in Lititz on Saturday. Ella Abbott, later Mrs. Beckler, attended Sunnyside College in the Hershey building in 1870-71 and 1876, and had not been in Lititz since then, feeling quite lost on this reunion.

Local Party Plans Eight Day Texas Tour
W. E. Hickman leads a Lititz group and others from the county on an eight day trip to Texas and Old Mexico. They sail Friday May 20 with a Sunday in New Orleans, then Houston and Galveston, arriving Harlingen Tuesday to tour the Rio Grande Valley for two days. The valley excels in irrigation and multi crop farming, with soil of deep silt loam. Grapefruit is praised for quality and sweetness, eatable without sugar. Fishermen Find Abundant Shad and More in Chesapeake Bay
On Tuesday Messrs P B Bucher Amos Oberholtzer and J Frank Buch again fished the Northeast Maryland coast along the Chesapeake Bay. They reported plentiful shad and other fish including carp herring rock fish catfish trout and eels. The bay catch is described as unusually large for years and the fish receiving houses display the scale of the operation.

A big crowd is ex pected at the game as the locals fans are anxious to see if the Pretzels can continue their vic tories. Lloyd Hoffman the hard-hitting Lititz boy is holding down first base for Hopeland. Mil er, of Manheim, is the catcher, Enck and Fetter, pitchers, Hahn, second base, and Goden auer, shortstop, both of Man heim, Kilhefner, an Ephrata player, third base. Hopeland organized late in the season last year but had eleven victories and only one defeat. On Sunday, May 15, Lititz will play at Womelsdorf.
