Miraculous Escape as Auto Struck Iron Post at Brubaker's Crossroads
An auto owned by Harnish of Lancaster and driven by a friend named Hipple crashed into an iron fence at Brubaker’s garden near Lititz Road Sunday evening. Despite high speed and a rough turn, all four occupants escaped without injury, walking to Lititz and then to Lancaster by trolley. The car was damaged, a wheel and fender smashed, but was driven away the next day after a new wheel was added. The report notes the miracle of no injuries and mentions Mrs. Catharine Smith’s 84th birthday and bakeries raising bread prices from 9 to 10 cents and 14 to 15 cents in town.

French Red Cross worker knits 22 sweaters for troops
Mrs. Peter Doppelt, a French native living in the Stedman building, is a leading Red Cross helper. She attends meetings early and stays late, giving spare time to the cause. Her notable feats include knitting 22 sweaters, 10 helmets, and 3 pairs of wristlets for the boys over there, and she recently received photographs from relatives in France showing ruins of their former homes.

Automobiles brought from Michigan by Lititz men
P B Bucher and Samuel Lane Jr led a party by rail to Saginaw Michigan to bring back forty nine Buick autos. Eighteen cars for a Lebanon dealer and three for Elizabethtown were sent home. Twenty eight for Lancaster arrived Saturday. Bucher drove the lead car with Lane behind. Only three punctures reported. Also notes a patriotic sermon followed by a few unpatriotic critics who should be punished. Athletic union suits and light underwear advertised by Lititz Clothing and Shoe Store.

John B Bachman aged 48 died at home after an eleven day illness from blood poisoning following a hand scratch at a chocolate factory. He taught in Elstonville and Farmersville, lived in Lititz, was a Justice of the Peace, Moravian church member, and assistant teacher in the pastor's Bible class. Elizabeth Meily, Lexington's oldest resident, died at her home after months of illness aged 83 years 1 month and 1 day. A lifelong resident, she lived in the same house for 58 years and was widow of Addison Meily killed at Chattanooga. Survived by two sons Addison and Devon and three sisters. Funeral held at the death house and Mellinger's church with Revs. Schantz and Kauffman officiating.

Funeral of David K. Hitnier at Middle Greek Meeting House
The funeral for David K. Hitnier was held at the Middle Greek meeting house with interment in the adjoining cemetery. He died at his Terre Hill home on April 24 after an eight day illness with pneumonia, aged 58, and was survived by his parents Reuben Britnier and several siblings including Elam K. Hitnier of Lexington and Mrs. Jacob Kramer of Millway.

Wyman reporting his injury in France while serving with the Marines and that he has been in hospital for two weeks undergoing an operation. Lititz youths in the Rainbow Machine Gun Division have seen heavy action in the trenches in France. Burnell Imhoff, son of Mr and Mrs Daniel Imhoff, wrote home reporting he has been in the trenches and came out safely. He notes the Germans fired over their heads but his number remained unhit and expresses relief at letters from family and copies of the Recorp.
